Hi all,

My 3870 card has just died and I need a replacement. Thinking of just getting a 1Gb 5770 but maybe thinking shall I just wait until the price of 5870 comes down?

Not gaming everyday, but when I do its mainly COD, Crysis or similar...and also only on a 19'' display (1440x900).

Would I notice much difference between the 2 at that res?

Any other suggestions?

You could buy an interim card like a 5770 or, if you are prepared to stump up more cash, a 5850. You might be waiting a while for the 5870 to drop in price. I would've thought at your res the 5770 should be adequate in most situations.

if your going for a 5770, I wouldn't pay more than 130, if you're paying above that I'd pay 165-170 for a 5830 and clock it up (some people are reporting very high clocks)

it's getting hard to find 5850's in stock for around 220-230 (HIS one on ocuk for 233), but definately worth it if you can push to that much.

waiting for a price drop might be a while...

I woudln't buy a 5870- its big overkill and 5850 will do the same job, nor anything as an 'interim' card.

5850 if you can stretch, but right now its overkill for your res right now.

5770 would be best, but not as future proof.

Depends really, if you like the latest and shinyest games, 5850, if you play old school games only getting a new one now and then, 5770.

Future proof in what way? Surely both have DX11? How much more future proof would a 5850 be over a 5770 and if thats the case then should I not just wait until the 5870 comes down in price a little?

Future proof in that really speculative unpredictable way duh :) The way things are looking I don't see much troubling a stock 5850 at your res for a decent while. Let alone an overclocked one. And by troubling I mean not being able to play maxed & smooth.

I just think the 5850 is the mutts nutts right now because;
a. i own one...
b. it is ace.
c. if you learn how to overclock it you can have it running at 5870 speeds with little or no hassle and possibly no extra voltage. This brings it pretty damned close to actual 5870 performance, and you save a ton. Literally.
d. if a quiet system is important to you, getting one would mean that with today's titles (bf2 being a prime example) it would likley be pretty damned quiet as it wouldn't be fully stressed. Mine at a step up on res only just spins up with bf2 on full.

5770 would probably do for you having said this; like I say, it depends on your gaming habits.

as many have said. 5770. but if you can really stretch to it then a 5850 would be awesome. you have held on to that 3870 happily enough for now so i suspect a 5850 would last you a good long while too.

some people have had some succes by *baking* the GPU in the oven for like 10 minutes or so.

with that said you have to take everything off, only the PCB and you have to protect it or the caps may go bang
