Cheapest way to cross the chanel - Ferry, Chunnel?

if the ash cloud kicks off again

i'd take the train.

If indeed.

Should you decide that you want to have your car available during the stay then def have a look at LD Lines to Ostend. Just be aware that the boat in use is a sister ship to the Herald of Free Enterprise and is old. ;)

Norfolkline have the most modern fleet on the channel and are a pleasure to use.

ANR - LCY is over an hour, so not sure where you got 45 mins from..

They're not a pleasure to use, unless you're used to some pretty poor modes of transport.
There are no quiet areas as there are TVs where ever seats are located, they're not particularly comfortable either and it takes ages to disembark at Dover due to the poor design of the ramps for cars and trucks.

Ha! You clearly haven't been to Belgium before.

There's also much more stronger security, you can't take big luggage with you on the plane, you can't take liquids, etc etc..
It's really not worth it.

Taxi time @ LCY... depends on time of day. Anything from 30 seconds to 10 minutes.

No, I haven't flown into Belgium before, just worked with said airline for 3 years.

I also never claimed that it was the cheapest, it's just that the incredible Mr Fox jumped all over my first post and wanted to have a little discussion about flying.

You want cheap, use Eurostar. You want really cheap, fly to Eindhoven then use the train. All depends on the actual destination I suppose.

ANR - LCY over an hour? Where did you get that from? I've dispatched enough aircraft to ANR so I should know.

It's a ferry, the most modern on the channel with plenty of quiet areas. I would rather use them over P&O and as for the ramps, that is down to the Port of Dover, not the operators using the port.

The quoted time on their web site is just over and hour.
Stating the time the aircraft is airborne is pointless as by the time you get on and off the plane it's a damn sight longer.
You could argue it's the same with the train but saying LCY - ANR takes 45 minutes a bit unfair.

I agree its the most modern, but I honestly couldn't find a single quiet area inside.
There's either a shop or a restaurant or a ****ing TV or some slot machines or whatever. The only time it was quiet was when I turned off the TV before some snotty little kid turned it back on :p
I also agree that they are preferrable to P&O :p
Speedferries were the best before they were forced out of business buy the bigger companies.

Of course the ramps are down to Dover, but it's very poor and certainly marred the experience. Not to mention I was in my car for at least 25 minutes before I started to move. That's unacceptable on such a (relatively) small vessel.

Never go by the advertised timetables. Most airlines give themselves a decent buffer in order to make sure they meet their on time performance targets. I think the timetable states LCY-ANR is around 1h05? It is in fact 45-50 mins at the most.
Ryanair to EIN is the same. Advertised as 1h05 but it's just 50 mins.

Cityjet could go from doors closed to airbourne in less than a minute in non peak times with turnarounds ranging from 12 mins to 30 mins. Maybe a slightly longer overall process than Eurostar but still fast in general.

lol I was laughing at your Norfolkline comment, I know exactly what you mean :p
Best place I found was on the left hand side of the boat just behind the restaurant area. Theres also a blacked out truckers area with flat seats/beds on the right hand side up the stairs. Nobody in there when I had a look and trucker or not, I can't see anyone saying anything.
