BFG Tech Announces Exit From Graphics Card Category

All my nVidia cards back to the 6800 (don't run anything older any more) are still working fine, only cards I've had die are the BFG ones :( and thats a different story... BFG just got shafted somewhere down the line.

It is a shame, but most of us saw it coming.

I guess if you want to take something good out of this, its what is a very good company will now be expanding its current product range and possibly moving into new markets.

They where certainly a great asset to Nvidia over the years, but Nvidia are not going to be able to supply everyone with enough Fermi cards and everything allocated to BFG will need to be sent out under warranty. I cant blame them for getting out TBH you cant run a company for the next 12 to 18 month without stock.

Another not understanding why they didn't just bin the nvidia exclusive thing and start doing ati cards unless there is something in their contract with nvidia that would have meant more trouble then it was worth and thus made it better to pull out completely. One more nail in the exclusive partner coffin as far as i am concerned and good riddance to that.

They also do a range of motherboards (bigger in the states than here), all nVidia chipsets so I expect they'd have to give those up as well. Like you say I expect there was something in their contract.

Nvidia do like to keep their best buddies in check with the exclusive partner deal.
A move to ATI would have certainly offered them a life line.

I thought Nvidia pulled out of motherboards after the N-force 790 ?

lol don't they do this by releasing drivers that drop the fan speed and ramp up the core temps to cook the card???

Other then this, you sure about that?

Have you never noticed the little display counting backwards ?

To be fair I think he means the BGA problem a lot of gt200 cards have.

BFG will continue to offer RMA, telephone and email support for qualified BFG Tech graphics card warranty holders, but will no longer be bringing new graphics card products to market.

means people are still covered.

So they did, my bad. I can't see them making much money with PSUs and Laptops, wonder which direction they will go in.

Maybe they have been compensated in some way and plan to return once Nvidia fixes Fermi. That would probably be doable with a huge financial reserve, but if they are not being supplied graphics cards then I cant see how they will plan to deal with the RMA's.

Another possibility would be riding out any Nvidia contract and making a move to ATI at a later date. That would make a lot of sense as they could clean up their reputation and have a decent supply of properly priced GPU's to replace the warranty cards.

Indeed, has already been mentioned. ;)

Yeah maybe, they obviously still have to deal with nVidia for some considerable time yet due to the warranty length, so I can't see them moving over to AMD/ATi exclusively unless the red team is very understanding. I also can't see them giving ATi cards to people who have purchased nVidia cards as warranty replacements.

They have obviously got something planned out, with a decision like this I would suspect they have their next move already setup and ready to go.

If the games arent getting made ( at least in far lower quantities) people wont buy new graphics cards... I think we can expect to see more companies doing the same within the next 12 months.

Nvidia make the cards die on purpose after 2-3 years. So offering a warranty above that is never gonna work.

everything has a design life guys and gals, and I reckon with gfx cards and how fast they change it would possibly be as short as 3 years. if you want to see how bad some companies reputations are regarding design life google for "sony japan kill switch" and see what you get.

Well judging by the popularity of the Radeon 5000 line there is still plenty of demand for high end PC gaming hardware which is supported by PC gaming growth in 2009 (despite the recession that is plaguing the console market) and where’s there's class there’s brass. Even most e-tailers have ETA's on most of there Radeon 5000 cards and this is despite the fact that AMD and TSMC have fixed the manufacturing issues and have apparently got the yields up to 65nm rates for quite a while now.
