£200 to change the oil from BMW stealers!

I bet they suck the old oil out from the top too. 15 mins tops

They do oil services on the Fast Lane Service - ie they get them in and out as quick as possible so they can fit more cars in. If they could do it in 15 minutes they would - yet they dont.

Stop getting so hung up on the name, think of it as 'Minor Service'.

What are the 'other checks' that they carry out Fox?

Nothing particularly impressive nor something that most people on this forum would need - stuff like brakes etc. But no matter how pointless, it takes time and means it isnt just a Jiffy-Lube style drop oil, new oil, done.

I agree with Fox ().

People really need to stop getting so hung up on the parts that go into a service. Minor services are basically Oil and Filter changes in most cases, but What you're really paying for are the checks and to an extent, that stamp.

I don't think anyone is in doubt as to what a 'minor service' is but an 'oil service' is quite clearly an oil service; the clue is in the name ;)
Of course, if you read the small print it will say something about preventative maintenance, somewhere, I imagine.

If the wheels are about to fall off I'm sure they'll let you know but let's not pretend they spend an hour going over the car with a fine toothcomb when all the customer has paid for is an 'oil service' :p

My point is that I doubt there is a difference, really. It's just naming. The BMW 'Oil Service' consists of pretty much exactly what everyone elses 'Minor Service' consists of, not just oil and filter.

My 'Oil Service' for example (Not the E60, though) also consists of changing both the cabin microfilters. Yet its still called 'Oil Service' not 'Filter Service'...

The book time is 45 minutes IIRC, so no, they dont spend an hour going over the car, they spend 45 minutes.

It depends.

If you've asked them simply for an oil change and nothing else, £200 is extortion.
However if it's a service interval they would do other things as well.

There is a list of what is carried out in an oil service available from your dealer. I've not sat and watched them but I've also no reason to suspect the whole thing is a large scale fraud where they claim to do things they actually dont, either.

I beg to differ. I have concluded you can't trust anyone. Bought a 55 plate Peugeot van last month, last serviced 5.000 miles ago (major svc), 6 months ago.

Opened the air box and the filter is so dirty I have never seen anything like it in my life. Leaves, fag ends, insects, sand all sorts of stuff. Looks like it might be the original 100.000 mile old one.

Call up the dealer that did the services to check if the history might be fake and they listed all the services performed - they all match up with the stamps in the book. Air filter was on the list of items to be changed at the last service.

I get worried so change the oil and filter - filter can is actually rusted on the outside and on tighter than a drum!

I doubt the air and oil filter got like this in 5k miles and 6 months. But what to say to the dealer. They will ask me how do I know where its been and how it was treated in the 6 months before I owned it.

I have some photos of the filter but nowhere to host it so if someone wants to look I will be glad to email it!

Oh I am not for one minute going to sit here and say there are not people in the motor trade who do things like this. There certainly are - LOTS of them, infact, its probably one of the most crooked trades going employing the biggest proportion of plain incompetent people around. I always laugh when somebody uses 'I'm in the trade' as justification for an opinion on cars, given that most people in the Motor trade are basically incompetent or downright dishonest.

But the head office of a large manufacturer will not have sat down and deliberately devised a fraudulent servicing regieme. Thats a step too far.

My VXR servicing schedule was broadly similar

Minor - Major - Minor - Major (bigger however)

The minor service was essentially an oil change, with some other checks as well on stuff like making sure brake fluid was topped up etc..

1st major service changed the oil and filters etc.. and the last big service changed the spark plugs / coolant etc.. and was about £350 from the VXL dealer.

each service was 12 months or 20,000 miles apart.

Sorry, I forgot to mention this was a Pug main dealer not someone the likes of Kwik Fit.

I'm sure head office has nothing to do with it, just the lazy dossers in the workshop who can't be bothered to spend 5 minutes changing a £6.99 air filter. What hope have we got when they claim to do a cambelt I wonder! :)

Having worked at one of the larger South East dealers I can assure you all that the technician only used to get fifteen minutes to carry out a oil service on an E46 (and all other 99 model year onwards cars). This includes collecting the parts and bringing the car in.

Suck the oil out the dipstick (BMW approved method) replace the oil filter, replace the pollen filter (in engine bay) and check the pads - using the BMW tool which actually only checks the outer pad. During this time the car is not ever sent in the air.

Screenwash and other fluids are not normally topped up as the owner should do these during their weekly checks on the vehicle.

We used to top up washer bottles as they have level sensor and had complaints about the warning light coming on after a service.

Virtually everyone used to find "other" faults on the cars as they were chargeable i.e. bulbs out or the real common one handbrake adjustment .

You've never been to Trainer BMW in Swansea :( Unless the oil they use is as black as the stuff that comes out and they can magically put in exactly the same amount of new that was in there previously.

Still, Sytner Cardiff will be getting my business this week. Lets hope they do a good job, I have asked them to diagnose the fault I now have with the restraint system:mad:

Wow, that is extortionate!

Can they really really charge this for 30 mins work?

Did you get the pollen filters done at the same time because on the earlier E60s they were a separate condition based service item but on the LCIs they got rid of that and tied the replacement into the oil change service.

Thats where his £200 comes from them - iirc the cabin filters are £50 a pair from BMW.

Not always, some BMW dealers still dont realise and include them in the service. Mine didn't thats why im asking.
