Ok, basically I'm thinking of getting a private plate and I'm wondering what plate to have for it. Plate will be going onto a Audi S3.

Options:

Standard acrylic plate - maybe 3d carbon fibre
Metal plates
German style plates

Pro and Cons and advice would be nice, pics would also be cool.

Those were mine.

In theory they should never passed an MOT using a none standard letter and a none standard badge on the left hand side. Vauxhall garage still gave me an MOT though, didnt even need to swap them round for my standard ones in the boot :D

My god they look absolutely awful. You were doing nothing to disprove the VXR image with those

i loved 'em

they got less of a reaction than your M badge mind ;)

Are they just normal legal plates?

they're not roadworthy in theory, but i drove round with them for months and past loads of police cars. Nobody batted an eyelid.

When I got my private plates made a few months ago I wanted them to be standard and legal but I didn't want the lettering at the bottom (the shop who made the plate's name and logo). I went to all the shops we've been using for years who in the past haven't batted any eyelid when being asked to use fancy font, mis-space and keep the bottom plain. When I went this time around NONE of them would make anything other than a standard legal plate - not even keep the bottom plain like I wanted.

From what one of them told me (this only applies to plates made recently):

There's a new law in force. All numberplates being made from the date of law being enforced have to be stamped on the behind with the date they were made. If you have an illegal numberplate and the Police pull you over and decide to check the date out (via some special light) and it's been made after the date of law, it's a £2,000 fine.

This guy who owns the shop does tell some tales so I'm not sure. As all the shops refused to do it, maybe it's true.

the £2000 fine is stretching the truth

you will be issued a VDN - vehicle defect notice which will give you 7 days to remove the plate.

Failure to comply with said notice can incur a fine of up £2000.

but it rarely, if ever reaches £2000. Alternatively you could just comply with the VDN and not get fined at all.

It's been in force since September 2001!

So it's just the old law which has been in force since 2001?! That procedure is the standard procedure which my cousin went through a few years ago.

I knew I shouldn't have listened to that guy!

He told me it's a NEW law and it'd be £2k fine and explained about some UV rubbish.

I might just get my plates made up online then. I know it's silly but the stupid logo and text and the shops phone number at the bottom really ****es me off and ruins the look.

they werent bsau marked, or marked with the supplying dealers name.

They have a none standard elblem (only the euro symbol or england/scotland/wales flags are allowed)

and it had none standard lettering as they were carbon effect, not black, also raised as well which is against the rules.

But because its legal font, legal spacing, looks black from a distance, and can be read by ANPR etc.. police never batted an eyelid.
