Noctua NH-D14 hitting ram ?

Why can't the manufacturing from Noctua should measurement height of the memory ram to ensure that all memory ram shouldn't fit any problem. Bad designed really.

How far do we go with this ? Including RAM with attached fans on top ? How about those dominator ones with insane towering heatsinks ? I heard watercooled RAM modules need to go pretty high up with them tubes and everything. Furthermore, what about RAM that comes out in the future, next month ? What about next year ?

Surely the line has to be drawn somewhere, making sure -most- RAM out now fits seems quite reasonable doesn't it ? Well, that's exactly what they've done. You see, there will allways be some fancy component that does not conform to convention, simply too much choice with PC hardware and yes, memory with high heatsinks is -definitely- in the minority, even among higher end stuff.

The never-ending corporate quest to 'out-fancy' the competition goes on. It's not bad design at all, merely sensible compromise. I suppose they could have made it higher, but then the blokes with smaller cases would cry 'bad design' and surely, making sure it fits in as many cases as possible -must- take precedence over individual component cross-compatibility.

Very well said! The gains you'll get from the Noctua will far outweigh those you'll get with those tall RAM heat spreader in my opinion. Do RAM modules even heat up that much?

[snip] Do RAM modules even heat up that much?

They do not.

It started out as a gimmick more than anything and it pretty much remains just that. Understandable though, it must be hard for memory manufacturers to differentiate themselves from the competition in these cheerful times of hardware bling, they do what they can.

Let me put it this way, extreme, fully watercooled rigs have the mosfet/northbridge under water, but very rarely the RAM. Do the maths

Furthermore, in this case, the relative scarcity of memory waterblocks in a non-argument, if it really needed cooling we would see more of them made and used. Indeed, had hard drives not been confined to the strict drive bay dimensions, I'm sure we would see them sprout heatsinks quite readily as well !

Oh bugger!!! i orderd the Thermalright Venomous X, because i was told
(even by overclockers) that it won't fit, and it does if you have the fan up a notch like you say.

Is there much difference in temp with this and the Thermalright Venomous X with 2x Noctua fans push and pull affect ?
That's huge :D
Good board that. just built one for someone with same ram.
Cheers.

P.s bugger lol

Don't worry about it. The VX is a tremendous cooler and at most it will only be a couple of degrees behind the NH-D14 using the Noctua fans on both. The good thing is that you can get get your own fans with the VX and performance scales very well with some higher RPM fans, as you can see in the review I linked in earlier.

im sure u can change unless its dispatched. sorry didnt see ur post earlier:(

Excellent pictures. I have the NH-D14 myself and didn't realise some of the taller RAM modules would fit. Noctua state themselves that you need to remove the fins on top of the Dominators to install the fan so seeing that the Patriot Vipers will fit, other people may be more willing to get the NH-D14 in the future.

Id love to have tried the NH-D14 myself, unfortunately though, with ocz reaper ram id never get it to fit.
