I moved abroad to the UAE but was wondering if I do large purchases in shops whether I have to pay VAT? I would imagine the large stores such as Selfridges and Harrods allow you to do this? Just wondering if me holding a UK passport but not being a resident allows me to get a nice 17.5% discount?:D

You have to pay VAT but the retailer should give you a VAT 407 form which allows you to claim a VAT refund, if you live outside the EU.

Thanks for that, will do some shopping when I get back home this summer then!
Not all retailers have VAT 407 forms. If you need a few I have plenty, so just mail me your address at jobs@ and I'll pop a few in the post.
