Which Licence Plate to choose ?

Just the job for an old Audi A3 then :)

Not an S3 as per the OP then no?

'Absolutely fine' despite the fact that it's an illegal plate and looks **** too?

Might be illegal, but I had a carbon effect one on my Civic, with a border and logo.

Was pulled over 8 times over my ownership. Number plate was never questioned once. Passed MOT every time.

Looks are subjective. I can't help it if you've got poor taste :p

Is an S3 not an A3?

I can see where you are trying to go here, although I'm quite suprised its you going there.

I just happen to think Audi's, BMW's etc look 'best' with nice, simple, legal dealer fit plates. He drives an Audi, so I suggested it for him. Not really sure what it has to do with 'mass produced' (Hint: Everyone on this forum drives a mass produced car, even you) cars. His car is no less 'mass produced' than mine. They are a similar age, similar brand position, similar power, similar performance etc.

It also happens to be pretty much the only sensible option given most of the other options are illegal and can provide trouble at MOT time - is it really worth the potential faff?

My dubmeister plates. They look great at night with LED numberplate lights, unfortunately my point and shoot camera doesn't catch this too well :p

Well no, it's an S3

This cuts deep. Why does it surprise you?

Yes, but you commented otherwise on MrLOL's picture.

It doesn't have anything specific to do with it - it's just how I described it and you are trying to make it more than it is.

Thanks for the unnecessary hint stating the obvious.

"I can see where you are going here". You knew I meant comparatively speaking. The number of S3's dwindles in comparison to the A3 1.8T, 530i etc.

Just as the number of Evo's produced is comparatively less "mass produced" in comparison to a focus or most other cars on the road.

For someone like you who lives to the law down to the detail, and idea of a risk is starting the car without a seatbelt on - no.

For someone who wants something a bit different, and appreciates that the average plod couldn't care less about a numberplate badge or border as long as the size and spacing are correct, and that an MOT tester would have to be having a terrible day to fail you for that reason - perhaps.

Incidentally I've not suggested that the OP should get anything other than a "normal" plate. Only that doing otherwise isn't the incriminating felony it's being made out to be.

I've been pulled twice so far. One female plod said I should change the front plate (given that it's unquestionably illegal - small, wrong spacing etc) but a bit of charm/flirt and she was laughing and waving me on the way.

The other one was a stern bloke copper who looked right at the front and said "Nice. Whats it putting out?". Nothing else. Admittedly surprising, but nothing else.

Incidentally I'll be changing my plates once I get a plate that isn't shamefully embarrassing.

Does it really?

There are 2967 E39 BMW 530i Sport Saloons registered in the UK (Trivia: Only 437 have manual gearboxes)

There are 4453 8L Audi S3 Hatches registered in the UK.

This means that for every E39 BMW 530i Sport, there are almost two 8L Audi S3's.

Now remind me again what it was you were saying about rare cars and mass production? :p

I just wore a set of tyres out in 7000 miles, I don't tend to drive around wearing a smoking jacket and some driving gloves. That said, I don't see the point in not conforming to laws which are pretty damn easy to conform to and where conforming has no real effect on me.

It was a pretty forgotton rule - though its been there since the numberplate legislation was revised in 2001 - but its come back into focus in the last couple of years with revised instructions to MOT centres to the effect that they should fail cars with plates that do not conform.

You wont have been affected as your car isn't covered by the legislation as it's an X reg.

Fox, your a *******

No need for that - I was being facetious to Gaijin following his comments about my plate :p Your car is the same age as mine anyway so I'm hardly having a go at its age! As I've said in the past, I like the Audi S3.

Please dont take my comment out of context.

I've been quite helpful to you in this thread - I've offered you my opinion, and I've even gone to the trouble of digging out a picture and uploading it to show you the sort of plate I think would suit your car.

Yet you swear at me because you completely misinterpreted what I said? Nice.

I don't know who raised the point about rare cars but I doubt there are more S3's then 530's.

Yet again Fox you have hijacked a thread and gave negative and unhelpful related thread comments, you seem to stalk every thread a right and love to continue with your Audi "Bashing"

I've just posted the exact numbers registered with the DVLA. You can find out who raised the point about rare cars by reading this thread.

You have GOT to be joking? Seriously?

I was helpfully and happily posting away suggesting plates for you, commenting on plate styles and even taking the trouble to provide photos of plates until I foolishly rose to Gaijins bait. The posts that followed that were between me and him and NO reflection on either you OR your car. I can appreciate how it might look if you simply scanned the posts and didnt read them but honestly - I was replying to his bizarre links between plate style and how 'common' a car is or isnt, thats all!

Unless you put the description of the 530 very wide (i.e. including estates, diesels, SE versions etc, which is unfair versus the S3 because it is essentially a particular engine variant of a particular bodystyle variant of a particular trim variant), then there are.
