Spec me a folding rig?

Ok so this is going to be a dedicated rig for folding and you want maximum points for minimum outlay? I would forget amd or high end gfx cards.

Just get the cheapest i7 rig you can and run bigadv CPU work units in a vmware 3 player session. That will net you 25K per day on it's own.

Then if you want to run one or two gfx cards you could get the cheapest mid range nvidia gpus at or around the [8-9]800G[T-X] sort of speed for good bang per buck, even the GT240 is worth a look in as a 8800GS/9600GSO alternative with better power-to-ppd.

I heard VMWare was just another overhead and I might aswell just use the machine in a non-virtualised environment. Is this not the case?

I was looking at 9800GT's, so that's fine. OK so I'll work on a i7 rig principle then. Thanks for the comments.

Linux is the only way you get bigadv wus and windows is easier to run gpus in. So you have two choices for maximum points out of one rig. Run Linux native and gpus under wine. Or run windows for gpus and linux in a vm. Neither are perfect so it really depends on your OS preferences. :)

the initial outlay of the i7 setup can be mitigated by shopping around or getting stuff second hand. But for bigadv wus you need 8 thread CPUs the i7 920 is the most cost effective ATM :)

I'm not touching Linux. I've had so many bad experiences with Linux I am never touching it again. I've seen loads of people run the -bigadv tag on Windows-based machines (well, at least in screenshots). Does this not work in Windows then? I'm sticking with Windows either way.

I'm not too worried about the i7 outlay. I've got some spare parts at home so I can save on things like the HDD and other small pieces like that, and the 9800GTs I'm getting second hand, so I'll be spending about £600 on things like mobo, cpu, case, memory and psu.

-bigadv runs in Linux, either in VMWare player 3.0 or full fat Linux. Luckily some nice chaps have built the VM image and all you have to do is run it, connect to the web page setup and away you go :)

i must be missing something. the rig that you are speccing, looks exactly the same as the one he has in the sig. not the case and the graphics card?
why don't you put 3 9800s into the one that you already have?
(or do they not mix at all? after all, they don't need to be sli/xfire... or does windows get confused with both drivers?)

Because the one I already have is my gaming rig and cost slightly more than £600 in total :)

Also, does the folding rig really use 6GB of memory? Could I not half it? Or does it impact the folding?

Edit: I just realised the 6GB is to allow the VM to run smoothly. Apologies.

Wow, I'm impressed with that! However I don't have a PSU and case spare. I've only got a couple of harddrives spare at present, and I also want to use a quieter cooler than the stock one. :)

I dunno, I've never been very good at eBay hunting.

Would both of those builds handle 4x8800GT or 9800GT cards in them?

Not 4 no, but 3 easily, and a bit of judicious second hand buying could bring it in a lot lower than what I have quoted, as everything is brand new including VAT

This is what has sold recently in the MM

i7 d0 920 @ 4GHZ £145
6GB OCZ Reaper DDR3 1866MHZ PC15000 £130
Antec 300 £35
PSU: £50

New:
ASROCK X58 Deluxe Intel X58 £168

Circa : £530 :)

I though MM was just 250 posts, or is there a time factor too now?

As for "Just use XP", then I agree - if you have access to it. Getting a legit copy of XP these days is like trying to find hens teeth! :p

Ah OK, I didn't realise it was a certain number of posts. OK I'll just wait then and see (don't want to spam).

As for the Windows XP setup, my work has loads of single-licence copies of XP that come with every machine bundled, which they said that they are happy to hand to me for this purpose, so I'm OK with that :)

No, it's three months and 250 posts or 1 year and 100 posts.

A bit confused though, Biffa. Those motherboards you selected have four PCI-e x16 slots and will support 4 8800GTs/9800GTs. The only proviso is that most will need to be single-slot cards due to the proximity of the slots.

Yeah got a bit confused there in me old age somehow thought that the OP Decided not to go for 4 cards :) Thats why my later spec has the ASROCK in it :)

Oh, so the UD3R isn't really what I want? OK. I checked the Asrock aswell and that seems to only have 3 slots.

What 4-slot motherboards should I be looking at here?

The X58A-UD3R should be fine

Unless you're worried about fan noise, in which case you'll need a significantly more expensive mobo with different PCI-e slot layout.
