Hey guys,

In need of your opinions here!!
Would it be worth buying a GTX280 from a 9800GTX?
Would there be substancial gains to back up my $100 investment? :P

Ohhh.
This was only a cheap upgrade for now..
The difference between selling my 9800GTX and buying this would be less than $100.
So I was thinking it may be worth it until the refresh of the current series cards in October I think it is.

The 280 would be about twice as fast so its up to you if its worth it for now.

They can be a bit noisy however (But i am a picky person).

Ah really?
Would be pretty worthwhile then..
Thanks mate :)
I think ill give it a try.. Can always sell it on again if im not happy!

I moved up to a 280GTX H2O from a 9800GTX when they first came out. The 280 takes most things that I throw at it. It is however getting a little slow in the new games on a 24" screen at 1920x1200. If you don't need all the sliders maxed out to the right you should do just fine.

Ah right thats fair enough.
Still.. All im looking for is an upgrade over my 9800GTX, and if the GTX280 is a worthwhile upgrade over it, then ill take the plunge!

There's no specific source...just read quite a lot of people mentioned their GTX200 cards having problems/died on them/artifacting over various forums.

I guess it depending on luck...but it seem too many people are having 'bad luck'...

Pretty weird that many 8800GT/GTX still working today...yet for the GTX200 cards being more recent cards, people start encounter problems for under 1-2 years usage...

Oh, so you read that some peoples GTX280's died from artifacting. Well that hardly makes it a well known problem, the 4870 I have should be well known to die from the same thing I guess, same for every other card out there.

The 280 is a very good card, and will still run most games maxed out, maybe not the very latest, yes a worth while upgrade from a 9800 if the out lay is not massive.

Aaaaah haha.
Okok :p
How much better than a GTX280 is the 295? Just out of curiosity :p
GTX280 it is, will only be costing me about $70 so bargainnn!

Looking at this review - the GTX 280 is significantly faster than the 9800GTX (usually 40-60% quicker in games). Does the GTX 280 you are looking at come with any warranty?

As for the GTX 295 - its a very fast card, here is another review that compares it to the 9800GTX and GTX 280 in games. Again, does this £250 include warranty?

Whether these costs are worth the performance boost you get is up to you. Personally I would suggest looking at a 5850 if your budget is in the £230 range. They are much faster than your current card, support DX11 and are relatively cool and quiet - also they come with 2-3 years of warranty, so if it decides to die you get a replacement.
