Hi guys,

Sat here in a horribly muggy room, and believe (hope) that it's a sign of a barbecue summer. I love the heat in the day, hate it when I'm trying to sleep.

I figure that it's best to get in early with an air conditioner, before prices raise in summer; but I know nothing about them. I've looked in all the usual places (no competitors), but it's a bit confusing.

Is an evaporative cooler the same as air con?

Does anybody here have an air con unit? Many thanks.

A proper AC unit, as in installed and everything will cool a hell of a lot, and can be used as cheaper heating in the summer too.

If you want a temporary solution you can get a mobile unit, talk to some AC companies as many do rentals.

And my dad is an AC engineer (just moved to OZ though).

I've found a number of mobile units, for about £200. Is that about right? My room is pretty small - 5x5 metres, I'd probably only need a small one.

Evaporative cooler uses water which air passes through, but you need to keep topping up the water tank.
Best bet is to install a proper split system, as these will be much quieter in use and can be used as a heat pump in the winter, also you wont need to put the hose out of the window.

I installed a split unit in my bedroom a few years ago.

£200 is about right yea, my dad used to rent them out.
Could cool your room and the hallway and nearby rooms if you control the doors properly.
But if you have the money in your own house then think about getting a full system installed, just get a few local quotes.

go to DVD store, buy Con Air and relax.

side note, I really hate this hot weather, nudey sleeping time.

I wouldn't get one fitted. They aren't prettiest looking things. Mobile ones suffice.

That tends to be more from cooling towers rather than actual split systems, I have not herd any one getting it from a split as yet, but yes you do ideally need to clean the coil and wash the filter.

If the summers start to consistently get hot then I think it'd be a good idea for new homes to be built with air-con fitted. When I go to Canada the majority of the houses there have in-built AC. Normally just a vent in the roof.

The one in my dads room was about 2 feet by 6 inches by 6 inches.

The one outside was out of the way (wall mounted) so didn't really matter, but was about 6 inches by a 2 foot by three foot.

Pipe goes through wall and can't be seen inside.

I found an portable ac unit on ebay for £50 about 2 months ago ready for the summer time also use it in the computer/games room when everything is on to keep temps down. It isnt the prettiest of things but it works well, all i did was hang the hose out the window and switch on. pretty quiet aswell. I believe the fixed ac unit need cleaning quite often and u have to use a special ac cleaner to kill the germs properly, dont know if the same applys to the portable ones or not.
