Hey, srry i didnt know where to put this so just stuck it in general :)

I've only just started getting into 3ds Max properly and I decided to model and render my PC case (Antec 902). Nothing special just a nice easy enough model to get me into 3ds max

Here is my results so far ( nowhere near compelte)

I modelled it in sketchup and imported it to 3ds to render but as you can see it still looks very, well not very realistic. And nowhere near as good as some of the renders i've seen on these forums.

If anybody knows how I can make this look more realistic that would really help me, thank you :)

getting into 3d max yet modeling in sketchup? get white background and a skylight.. best off all look on google how to set up a simple rendering scene

I don't know a lot about 3DS but the only things I think that'll make it look more realistic are better textures, more definition on the edges, shading/shadows and some lighting/reflection.

hmmm ok, yeah i guess white background might be better haha

i read somewhere about mental ray aswell but its a bit complicated at the momment as i don't really know my way around 3ds max well yet, i'll persevere though :)

and yeah i also have started modelling in 3ds max but they aren't worthy of being seen yet ahah

thanks for the quick replys :)

one thing you'll need to know is that making the same stuff that you see others make will take a lot of time and patience. i'm ok at modelling and animation but anything else and i'm useless.

as others said, your materials and lighting will make a scene. great work on those two can save a poor model, it doesnt work the other way around.

White environment and switch to Mental Ray renderer, turn on global illumination, ambient occlusion... Make some materials...

Oh, and don't use sketch up :P

Watch loads of video tutorials, read up on rendering etc.

There's nothing actually "wrong" with sketchup itself, you can get some nice looking renders out of it, such as:

You can get good stuff out of sketchup, it can just bit a bit awkward when making complex models. XfoXscott's biggest issue is that he simply hasn't set up the render parameters in 3DS Max, lighting and the scene, that's all, nothing to do with the model itself.

Change the back ground to off white, create a decent perspective view for the render. Save the image at highest quality Jpeg, people always fail and not notice that it defaults to compressed.

Create a plane for the object to sit on so you can create ambience where light hit the object and floor.

Either just slap a sky light in there and render or create a ambient occuslsion render and a diffuse render and overlay in photoshop.

Google ambient occulsion for more info on this.

Also use smooth edges or whatever it is in max for the harsh lines your getting on curves. Not used max for 2 years, Maya for the win!

so its more to do with the rendering than anything else?

It's ALL to do with rendering. A great model will look like utter junk if rendered badly, a poor model can look decent when rendered properly.

I do use 3DS Max as well as sketchup though, those images are just a selection of some of the stuff I've made in sketchup. If you need a hand with stuff, I'd be happy to chat with you over MSN if you use it, to give you a hand setting up your scene for rendering.
