BMW Owners - Advice needed

It's an absolutely bottom of the range 5 Series. Are you sure thats what you want? It's a pretty good engine though its far more suited to something like a 3 Series as it's not particularly powerful.

I have no issue with mileage as you well know but I also wouldnt take on a BMW diesel without a warranty. And you cant buy a warranty worth having for a 120k mile car. If you want a 120k 5 Series thats 4 years old (And actually, this sort of car makes perfect sense because it'll have very little wear, very little price and be in fantastic condition) then get one with a petrol engine and make your own warranty by stashing a grand in a bank account.

Which it'll then empty. Quite a few times :D

Provided you are happy to mentally depreciate the car to zero the second you buy it, I think a 4 year old 100k+ 1 owner car is a very, very good way to buy a used BMW. As long as you use some of the saving to pay for repairs rather than stretch yourself to a high mileage BMW, mind.

I think its a good buy...

Might not have the required 6 cyl's or leather, but depends what matters to you.

Ive been nothing but impressed with my SE. Not a fan of leather or the look of the sport, so it suits me.

As a car it has a great chassis, drives well etc etc

A 6 or 8 cylinder engine is part of the core appeal of something like a 5 Series. Not neccesarily for performance but more for the refinement and smoothness that is the very thing a car like this should be known for.

While I agree, and i do love the 3.0 diesel, im just saying it doesnt matter to everyone. The 520d is probably the best seller as people also want the economy etc,... not for me, but might be for others

Ok I take that on board... so what should I be looking at around £8-9k that doesn't look dated and isn't too "sporty" as it's not for using to pose

I'd rather have a 6 cylinder too that ideally doesn't have such a high mileage

I'm not sure there is much. You wont want an E39 for £8-9k, it isnt really enough for a decent E90, I think something like a 2003-2004 530i SE is probably the way to go, though personally I think that in non Sport form (Forget a Sport at this money) they look utterly shocking, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

This was particularly difficult to find, mind - I don't really think this is a particularly good budget. It's too much for something like an E46 or E39 SE, and it isnt really enough for a really nice E60 or E90 SE. Thats the only sub 100k one I can find in my albeit quick scan of PH classifieds.

You'll want to avoid Sport models from what i can make of your requirements :)

I suspect he'll find it too dated - I have to admit in SE form at least they are beginning to look aged now, the Sport fairs a lot better but he doesnt sound like he wants the compromise in ride quality that a Sport will offer him.

Get an E class instead.

I think I am inclined to agree here. I've said before that I think the W211 E Class is a better car than the pre LCI SE E60. The 5 Series trump card its its dynamic ability, something which you obviously are not fussed about as you'd prefer something comfortable - therefore the Merc makes more sense. It's also built as well, if not better, than the pre LCI E60.

Easier to find a nice E320 in budget as well - though I'm not sure what they are like reliability wise. Mind you with all this sort of car you must be prepared for some large bills along the way.

I never had a problem with either of mine, except a new gearbox under warranty in one.

My wifes is still going strong now (04 plate)

I'll have a look at those, i'm open minded.

I want something safe, reliable and 5 series size (ish) as there's a second baby on the way.

And i'm used to big bills on the Impala, it just depends what I can do myself on these cars...
