Tell me about.....Air Con

Never really calculated the actual costs, mine was only used during the evening in the summer for a couple of hours, bare in mind the compressor will shutdown when room temp is achieved, newer models have VSD on the compressors so they will vary the speed depending on load, and stop - the - stop / starting of the compressor which helps with current in rush.

One of the units I linked to has a cooling cap of 3.5kw and pulls just under 1kw.

I was offered several free portable AC units at the end of last year, ranging from 10 to 15000 BTU. I never pulled my finger out to go and pick them up.

I get a feeling I will regret that procrastination!

Well if only you could turn back time! lol
Mine is a 10,000 btu and cools my room which is approx 4.5x6m and is excellent when i have the projector, xbox and pc running at the same time. Havent had the chance to use it on a HOT day yet but think it should still do the job. I would check ebay, probably find a bargain locally.

If you want to save around 30% on elec then look for the inverter types.

If you are getting a split system or multi split, then make sure it uses R410 and not the older types of gas. We have several air con systems at work that are several years old and I have been told that they can't be re gassed if anything goes wrong.

Also, avoid the cheap split systems as they can be a false economy, Daikin or Mitsubishi are the ones to go for, you will probably find them quieter too. Also bear in mind there are several bits of pipe work, including a small drain tube.

EDIT: The portable ones need a window or hole in the wall to vent the hot air.

Bear in mind they're hella loud if you're trying to sleep in a room with one in. And even if you get a portable one, it'll need an exhaust pipe out of a window - this means on hot nights your room fills up with bugs :(. I bought one and never really used it, because of these issues.

Decent ones aren't, my bedroom in Portugal has one and it was about as quiet as a computer when it was in night mode.

I've got a 10k btu portable unit in my bedroom, its great, the only gripe is as mentioned you need a vent putting in your room to stop the bugs getting in the window, also with the window open as soon as you turn it off its not long before the room is back to normal temperatures, 'cos the protable ones are way too loud to have on while your trying to sleep, i just put it on full blast till i go to bed then turn it off while my room is freezing.

our work has air con and pretty sure its not been serviced. It was installed 2.5 years ago.

After that long I would dread to think what the filter is like

Every few months I hoover the filter which does our rooms and the crew room downstairs for the site employee's.

I've had my portable unit for years, it's pretty loud but I can sleep with the noise, I can't sleep with the heat, hate it!

Isn't the trouble with the portable units (who needs a built in one in england?) the great big hose that you have to end up chucking out the window and as such let all the warm air from outside in?

Mine has a built in 25ltr condenser tank which i havent needed to empty yet and i made a perspex sheet to fit in the window with a hole for the exhaust pipe to stop any bugs getting in, seems to work fine but will have to see if any mozzies get in over the next couple of weeks.

:D

Net curtain stops the worst of the bugs - though good luck cleaning it afterwards (found that one out too late).

Got a portable unit here, about 8-9k BTU. Helps but doesn't cool nearly as much as I'd like - though to be fair it was fighting against four PCs on full tilt. :D

At night I just shove a 20in fan in the window and leave the door open. That soon takes care of temperatures (but also sucks the bugs in )

Would love a split A/C unit but living upstairs makes that impossible.

Goes out the back  :p:p

Flashy sod :D

Had a look at a nice new installed VRF system today and had a play around with the Mitsi controller. Didn't get to really mess around today with forcing temperature alarms to see if the logic system works properly, but overall pretty impressed.

Fancy air con = cool :D
