OK had a honda crv and was insured via a 4x4 specialist, car was written off a week or two ago, blame and so on still being sorted.

Buy a new car today, call insurance and they say they don't insure cars... eeek

then they state i can't cancel my policy because i have made a claim, and that im now responsible for the remained for the policy, which is about £330 left spilt over the remaining 10 months. Meaning i will now have to pay a policy for a car i no longer have plus a new policy elsewhere with someone for my new car...

What are peoples thoughts on this, seemed a little harsh? as the pay out they are giving me means i could not afford another 4x4 :D

but i can see there reasons for it

"dude has a car with a dead engine then insures it, sets fire to it, gets a pay out, cancels policy...."

Check the terms and conditions but I'd be amazed if you can't cancel your policy, having made a claim or not. There'll be a cancellation charge though.

Once an insurer pays out on a total loss claim, the policy is complete.

When you pay monthly for a car insurance policy, you are not infact paying monthly for a car insurance policy. You are paying for a finance agreement which has been used to pay the policy in full at the beginning of the policy.

Therefore you must continue to pay because you still owe them the money.

jeees, gonna pay this next one up in one lump this time...

so that's it then i have to pay them my monthly instalments?

Its not just on Total Loss Claims as well, I had a Accident in which my car was repaired and returned to me. I Sold it 2 months afterwards, and got told i can cancel my policy but am not entitiled to a refund as i had an accident.

Have you asked them why you have to continue the policy as you have no insurable interest.

You can cancel the policy, you just won't get any money back from it. What's hard to understand?? They insure you, you crash, they pay you money, you're no longer entitled to a refund of the policy cost.

taking out insurance on a new car is now confusing.

I did have 11 years no claims, chap says on the phone i had a maximum of 8... and lose five for my claim??????? so he then tells me i can legally say i have 3 as i lose 5..... wft??? is that correct, i thought i lost the lot (if the case goes against me, as its still in debate)

Its not usually that much

i only lost 2 years when i had a small bump 3 years ago. But no, its not normal for you to loose the lot.

im filling out insurance now..

i have stated i have 11 years no claims, and this below

as no out come has been settled is this correct? or have i lost some no claims.

At present, i have had no payout and no one has had the blame laid in the case

This is definitely not the case with Admiral group, therefore as per usual this must depend on the company in question's policy rather than being true across the board.

(I had a total loss payout, i was then offered a pro-rata cancellation refund as per usual on top of the initial payout as a separate credit).

you loose your NCB automatically once you make the claim

it only gets re-instated when your claim is found in your favour. its best not to lie about NCB as well as the insurance company can very quickly check with your current one.

Your total loss was non fault though?

It was paid by my company due to helphire passing my case back to my insurance company after a liability dispute meant they didnt want to deal with it any more. I still to this day dont know what happened re that dispute as i have never heard anything back re the case.

Whether i was offered the refund due to it being attacked as a non fault accident or not i dont know though, i always adamantly insisted that it should not go down as a fault case. I suppose this may have been offered as they should have been expecting to recover from the third party.

I really should follow this up one day as technically i have a £1250 excess which is as yet unrecovered as far as i am aware, which was deducted from the payout at the time pending recovery from the 3rd party.

Best ignore my case here actually, as my claim became messy and complicated. :o

ok i put down i had 3 years, as my insurer said that is correct, because i will drop from 5 to 3, even though i have 11, if that makes sense, seems fair

the 5 to 3 bit makes sense, as its usual for you to loose 2 years

what i dont get is why they say you were on 5 prior to this crash, and you say 11 ?
