Hi all

After some research i purchased the Nikon D5000 the other week. I wanted a prosumer camera but with price restrictions i went with what i thought was the top end of the consumer market (the other option was the Canon equivilent but i decided i had Canon in the past and wanted to know how well Nikon worked).

I plan to get a good kit to match - once i learn how to use the camera properly - then upgrade to prosumer.

So now that i have the camera & standard lens - i was hoping anyone could give me some honest critique on what i should expect from the camera. Its pros - its cons...generally your honest opinion on the funcionality of the camera.

Note i have no interest in the video aspects. I want to steer away from standard settings and go for 100% manual control.

Any critique would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Err. Its a great camera! Been using my friends on and off (Own a D40 :( ) and really like it.
The screen might seem a bit of a gimmick at first but its come in pretty useful many times so far with live view for getting shots over or under stuff you would struggle with otherwise (Like at a zoo for instance).

Picture quality is great as with about all DSLRs, lots of pixels to play with and great ISO performance.

Its basically a D90 but without a AF motor in the body, but with a swingy screen :P

It depends on what you are going to be using it for and it also depends on your level of expertise. Sure you can take some amazing pictures of fireworks (talking from experience) and DoF is pretty slick with a 50mm f/1.4 but i believe that has more to do with the lens. the one place i think it would fall down is on preserving the clarity at the edges.

And a porroprism (pentamirror) instead of a pentaprism and with one command dial and the top LCD missing. I have one with a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 as my 'chuck in the back of the car' camera.
