Morning all

I'll keep this brief. Is it advised to replace brake calipers in pairs? Or will just replacing the "offending" one be fine?

What sort of lubrication should I use on the caliper sliding pins? Half of the internet says copper grease is no-no, the other half says it's fine

Cheers

If you are replacing them with new ones id do them both, but if its with a second hand one Id just do the one tbh

Depends on which sort of sliding pin, if its inside a boot i've always used hi temp lithium grease, if its like my brembo pin (which holds the pads in but allows them to slide slightly, i've used copper grease.

I've replaced just the one with no adverse effects - ie passed the MOT the next day and had no issues with brake balance.

Are you replacing all of the caliper or just renovating the sliders? I did a caliper refurb on my MR2's calipers rather than buying new ones. The kit was pretty cheap from Brakes International and in total took me hardly any time to do, despite rusted caliper bolts etc doing their best to stop me!

I'd use high-temp grease, just to be sure as its a PITA taking the calipers apart to clean out old/cooked grease.

I'll be replacing the whole caliper with a refurb unit (£60) if greasing the slider pins and giving it all a general cleanup doesn't work

Usually, if the sliders have jammed up it is because the boot has perished. Same thing goes for the piston if that has stopped moving properly. It is usually far cheaper to get a refurb kit than a new caliper.

That would do both sides, £30 + a big bottle of brake cleaner. Not a scary job at all, even for a novice as it is all pretty obvious how it all comes apart and goes back together :)
