Attitude of the public to bodybuilders

That ticked me off when i held a lot of muscle during my college years, i had basically just started training and i was taking Maximuscle Cyclone and Promax Amino Acids and because you're a beginner, you seem to be able to develop muscle and lose fat quicker than usual, but with the supplements it was a lot quicker than usual, and after about 6-8 weeks, i got labelled for using steroids because of it.

I'm no longer a big guy however, i decided i felt more comfortable getting a ripped physique rather than bulk and now i'm training towards that goal and to mantain it.

You will also naturally have high testosterone levels at that age which helps.

Especially as every lady I've ever been with has always expressed their dislike for body builders..
Did you ever think that it could be, perhaps, that's why the women who are attracted to your body type are attracted to your body type? Because they don't like bulk and over-definition? Whereas the women that are attracted to body builder types go for, oh wait, body builders!

Or is that a leap to far on the common-sense-oscale?

I lift big, for my body weight, nothing in comparison to some on here. I'm not huge, I've gained some weight, and I've a muscular body. I lift because it enables me to row better, to run better, to cycle better, hell to **** better. I lift because I love it, and it supports and helps better what I love doing.

I lift therefore I am? Well ok I'm not sure paraphrasing Descartes is necessary, but I have a lot of respect for body builders. I have zero respect for tarts who go to the gym to pump their biceps.

i work out and probably train harder than 99% than the rest of the population.. The difference is I look normal to everyone else..
Maybe its just the lifter in me, or perhaps its the long distance athlete, but I can't help but feel you're doing something wrongly.

No it's cos i prefer to do a decent combination of cardio and medium / heavy weights. Plus i cycle a lot.. I don't ponce around in a mirror flexing my muscles giving myself winks, nor do i go out in the eve wearing tight tops in the hope that i get noticed by other men thinking oooh this husky fella works out.. Every woman i've ever dated has always been slim and attractive (though that was some time ago since i'm now married with kids) I guess you could say that they were all as normal as you could get.. Wore wormal size bra's decent fashion sense and all, and NONE of them ever thought i man who bulked up was ever attractive. That is one of the main reasons of my negative image towards bodybuilders.. You should always value a womans opinion.

Funny, I do a heavy weights/cardio/stamina routine and use the mirrors for form nothing else. And I have a very well defined body. Anyone actually training properly will have a distinct body change.

I don't really see what the build of the women you've dated has to do with anything. Slim and attractive women are not exclusively attracted to slim men, or vice versa.

I guess what I'm driving at, is, people who know **** all about bodybuilding don't understand why you'd do it. Likewise people that know **** all about computers don't understand why you'd spend your time doing what you do to them. Ultimately it's a bit of ignorance as well as a preconceived erroneous ideas and stereotypes of such people.

Stopped reading the thread after that post. Totally agree with the above. Superb post.

Everybody has there passions , each to there own....:o

I can guarantee you that you're not lifting heavy weights, probably not even medium either, if you look normal sized, especially as you say you workout 99% percent harder than anyone else in your gym. If so you're training for stamina more than anything. Which is fine if thats your chosen goal, hence you are not adding any muscle.

Also how does posing in a mirror and wearing tight clothing affect your muscle mass?

Just to add to the clothing side of things. The bigger you are the more you feel the heat and the less you feel the cold, hence why bigger guys sometimes wear less. Vest are also less restricting when training.

And buying cloths is difficult once you get to a certain size too, bodybuilders are not catered for in any high street shops. So it's a compromise of either wearing stuff that is far to big in one area, or a light tigth in another, or both sometimes. Buying a suit of the rack for example is impossible.

Is it just bodybuilders wearing tight clothing that you dislike or is it tight clothing in general. Seems to be the fashion at the minute to wear skinny jeans and tight t shirts (normal looking/skinny guys)?

Stereotypes.

You overclock computers so you are a skinny weakling loser.

You work out so you are a braindead meathead that likes starting fights.

Sure there is some truth to every stereotype. If you sit in a dark room playing with your PC alone all the time there is a good chance you are a skinny weakling loser but that doesn't mean everyone is like that.

If you are interested in being muscular, you might be doing it so you can beat up people and be a womaniser. Or you might just want to be healthy and lift heavy stuff.

The answer is to stop being so prejudice in general tbh. Everyone is different and has their own reasons, don't worry too much about what others think and do what you enjoy. They might overclock or bodybuild but also do loads of charity work for an obvious example.

I personally have respect for anyone that does something to better themselves, I think I can generally spot idiots easily anyway and the size of their muscles or the speed of their CPU has little to do with it.

So being a bodybuilder doesn't mean you are a **** at all in my eyes.

In aswer to OP I think it's rather odd. I feel the people involved are misguided as to what is nice looking and what is actually rather revolting looking. It aslo seems to me like a bit of a mental illness. Obsessed by increasing muscles probably shows a sense of inferiority and they probably don't have a high opinion of themselves.

I see nothing wrong with keeping fit but body building is strange.

Im gonna ask a really nooby question im training to get my weight up along with a lot of weight training to lift heavy weights to be big and strong.
My question is what catergory does that put me in is it a weightlifter or bodybuilder, whats the difference?.....told you this is a daft question:p

Well said, great post - Couldn't agree more.

While I dislike people who have to show off what they have, it doesnt annoy me. They hae worked hard for it and if it makes them feel good then what the hell is the problem? If they try and show off its a different matter. Most bodybuilders are the former.

thedoc46, people arent atacking you because you stated an opinion different to theirs, its because of your complete lack of understanding of the reasons people bodybuild.

What you've said is that you dont like bodybuilding because of the PEOPLE. why not say you just dont like bodybuilding itself? Not eveyone who weightlifts does it because they want attention, and thats why people are annoyed when you say that. You said you work out, which shows you like to look good, which is what bodybuilding on any level, I can relate you too any bodybuilder, some just take it more seriously than others.

I consider that weight lifting. Which is what I do. :)

Nothing wrong in wanting to get from being weak to strong, or getting yourself in SHAPE.. Those people typically are normal. Lets not confuse the issue here. A body builder is someone who wants to have abnormally sized muscles, he wants people to think omg that man must be so strong look at the size of him. he HAS to be steroids. Or as you all say' he's not doing it right!!! He's happy to lose some of his agility just to have bigger bulging muscles.. He likes to look at himself a lot in mirrors and probably posts pictures of himself on the internet to receive compliments about himself.. even though he hung like a party sausage.

I have a pal who use to be a bodybuilder.. One day he agreed to himself that he looked a **** and in the last 10 -15 yrs came off all the steroids and stopped trying to get huge, and eventually came down to a normal, stocky size. I hope you all come to your senses too !

No one here is taking illegal supplements as they are against the law and they are against forum rules to discuss their use. Ergo, no one would be able to go into the details of it at depth. All the regular gym rats here are 100% natural, myself included.

So people don't discuss it on OcUK, doesn't mean they don't take them.. Wake up and smell the coffee. Maybe YOU don't but trust me, the majority of bodybuilders DO and the ones that don't, do not actually look anywhere near as big as the ones that do. A natural bodybuilder is as rare as rocking horse poop.
