Lionel Messi - The 47 goals

Like to see him try that in the Premier League. I'm not denying his obvious talent but Spanish defenders and refs are VERY soft compared to the Premier Leagues. Not to mention that the gap between the top 2 teams and the others was a staggering 25 points. There really isn't much competition in La Liga.

Still, he is currently the best player in the world.

Eh? He's done just that against some of the supposed best teams in the Premier League, albeit on a European stage.

Indeed. this year Arsenal got a taste of his magic and last yr it was Utd that got a taste of his magic in the final of that year.

But can he do it on a cold, wet, windy and muddy DW Stadium on Tuesday night?

LOL well im sure its not always stupidly warm down in Spain...it does get a bit cold, wet, muddy and windy there too so i imagine he would be able to do it at the DW stadium:p....but thats not likely to happen is it as Wigan have no chance of ever playing CL football:p....and i dont think an exhibition game against Wigan is going to hold much interest for Barca:D

Also it begs the question of whether he would need to? Barca should have enough to beat the weaker Premiership teams without Messi. Players like Messi are special because they can win the big games against the best opposition. Same goes for Drogba, Rooney, Henry at Arsenal etc. Zidane was probably the best example, what made him the greatest of his generation was the fact that he would deliver in CL finals, WC finals etc.

They dont look so bothered when they score probably because they do it so often and some of those games they are already 1 or 2 up.

He does make it look stupidly easy though which is the most impressive part every goal he just takes in his stride and doesnt seem to make hard work of any.

Id also like to point out Ibra, he scored 21 goals this season was it? And look at some of the assists he gets in that video the vision/pass incredible.

Yes, Man U are one of the best teams in the league, but they are not too aggressive. The same goes for Arsenal, and our defence cannot handle ANYONE running at them at pace so it's not surprising MESSI running at them would net him 4 goals. I was talking about teams like Stoke who have very aggressive footballing tactics, especially defensively.

Watch it in HD...

Very very good player, but I would like to see him in Serie A or Premier league taking a run at some really good defences week in week out.

Low backlift on a lot of his shots, I think sometimes he catches the keeper unawares before he's set himself.

Yeap, looking through the goals his ability to be deceptive is what is making him a real success. His shots aren't particularly hard or fast, they're just good enough against those around him.

That and shot placement. If you look at the video pretty much all of his goals, even the headed ones, are in the corners. The odd one or two get through due to some poor goalkeeping or just because they were at point blank range and the keeper didn't have much chance. However, most of his goals, particularly the ones from the edge of the area, are placed to perfection so that power doesn't matter as much.

The WC has nothing to do with the world player of the year aka Ballon D'Or i think its called.

Messi won it last yr and id be very surprised if he didnt win it again this yr...hes been by far the best player on the planet this yr.

Yes it does.

Cannavaro won it in 2006...... :/

Arsenal were stupid and Vermaelen should have been fined for his performance in gifting Messi goals, but that's Arsenal and their 'beautiful football', which against the top sides results in defeat. To make it worse they were massively depleated. Against us in the final, we were truly awful and looked a beaten side, which is a shame, because they didn't do a whole lot and Messi in particular didn't play well (again) but managed to bag a goal.

Messi flies in Spain, but their league is awful. The problem is that the worst teams still try to play attacking football, the end result is that the top teams score a lot of goals. Real Madrid did some kind of record this season for scoring 4 or more goals in 'x' amount of consecutive games, that says it all.

There is little doubt that Messi is a fantastic player and probably has been the best player since December, although for me it's not a case of him just being way ahead of anyone else, Messi is a player who depends massively on other players pulling the strings around him, particularly Xavi (who I would say impressed me more than Messi this season gone), where as many other top players such as Ronaldo, Rooney, Lampard etc. are the orchestrator's in their sides.

What I would say is that in England Messi wouldn't have hit close to so many goals, but his game (and the team he plays in) are perfectly suited to playing against teams who try to play against you, and in Spain they get this weekly.

Ronaldo the orchestrator of his side? You sure? Since he's been in Spain all I see him do is try and run it into the net all the time and when it doesn't work he gets a strop on and walks away. Ideal example is the Barca/Madrid game where Messi ran the show and Ronaldo looked like a 5 year old who'd had his ice lolly taken away after his numerous failed attempts at selfish play

Also, Messi always has the ball and floats around and is always creating dangerous moves as well as ending them. Not sure what you mean, though he certainly influences games more than Ronaldo, Rooney or Lampard

Chelsea scored 7+ goals against Villa(who had one of the best def record in the league) , Sunderland, Wigan and Stoke, while Barca never scored more than 6 this season. Also chelsea scored more goals in the league than Barca...

I would like to see some evidence of this 4-X run of games as the longest run that I can see is two games...

BTW this statement is brilliant-"The problem is that the worst teams still try to play attacking football." La Liga has problems but I sure hope they don't solve that one any time soon!

Two seasons in a row Messi has been top scorer in the Champions League. It can't just be because the Spanish League is rubbish. It's obviously true that Messi needs players around him, football is a team game. Messi may need Xavi but surely needs Xavi needs Messi just as much?

Look at Rooney, he can't do it all himself, he still needs Valencia and Nani etc. whipping balls into the box for him.

Messi has still carried Barcelona a lot this season still as well. Look at his goals against Arsenal, none of them were set up on a plate for him. Same with his goals against Stuggart and a lot of his goals in La Liga. It's not like his teammates are creating chance after chance for him and he's just scoring tap ins.
