MG ZR

I had a rover 25, and now have the mg zs 120. Didnt have a problem with a rover but the gasket did go on my zs.

I also have friends who have/had the zr and have to say I much preferred driving it to the 25. My brother also has a 45 which is the rover equiv of the zs. Again I would say I prefer my zs 100% in both looks and drive.

I thought the MGs handled great but to be fair I havn't driven a huge number of cars.

As for people moaning that the styling is out of date, so what, if you like the looks you like the looks, and personally I love the styling of the MGs.

I know a fair few have problems but parts havnt been an issue for my zs, 25 or brothers 45, and they arn't that expensive to fix.

I think they look so much better than other hatches in the price range and are so cheap now.

edit - Hopefully after I get myself a nice graduate job (fingers crossed) I will be trading the zs in for a nice mk2 180 or zt.

To say your username is 'mglover' I'd say you were not an mglover at all.

He seems spot on to me.

The Rover 25 came about in 1999.

But in reality despite the change of name it is just a Rover 200 facelift - which came out in 1995.

I love the people who imply that an MG ZR is identical to a Rover 25 bar the body kit, as this is just so far fetched it makes me laugh.

The MG ZR is just a Rover 25 Sport, nothing more. Look at any other manufacturer and you'll see the same differences between the normal models and the Sport models.

It seems whenever anyone mentions buying a Rover people get all scared and tell the OP that if they buy it the world will end.
Your car will never drive and it will be the biggest waste of money ever.

A friend of mine wanted an MG TF and I posted about those here.
I was told numerous things about how rubbish it was, how it would be constantly breaking down.
Someone told me half the engine needed removing to get to the spark plugs.

He bought that TF anyway and he hasn't had a single issue with it.
It runs lovely, he's been on numerous long journeys in it.
He's really enjoyed owning it.
DOn't be put off by these Rover haters - I'll admit it wasn't a badge I'd ever looked at for myself, but there are plenty of happy owners out there.

Oh and as for this parts shortage.....plenty of people still making the parts for them.

Happy MG Zr owner here, got the 1.4 105+ version however. Parts are not rare and not likely to become rare or unless you end up after body panels or something, even then they should be obtainable from the right places.

No problems with mine at all, as for it being identical to a 25 they're not, they do share a lot of stuff although this can be said for a lot of different cars.

Don't let the fear mongers put you off, every car has it's faults. Tell your mate to go out and drive one and decide for himself. If this specific one is as you say he should be on to a winner. A lot of boy racers have them now so there are a few ropey ones out there, i definitely saw a few when looking around. This combined with the OMG HGF and MG don't exist attitude has resulted in them being very cheap and ultimately fairly good value.

If you have any questions send me a message in trust as i don't check these parts of the forum often.

Sounds a good price for a 160+ tbh.

They're a good allrounder which will be fun to drive. Theres soooo much hysteria about HGF and inevitably it will happen BUT theres nothing catastrophically expensive thats likely to go like you could get on some cars.

Just budget for HGF :) £350 on ebay or circa £800 elsewhere.

I'd say generally good reliability on the whole compared to any rivals for the same money. 160bhp (0-60 in 7.5 or so), 40mpg on a run....etc etc

head gasket for the 1.8 i think range are around £60 if you buy from rimmer brothers, only problem is the cost of getting it fitted if you're not able to do it yourself.

Yea i did mean including labour. Didn't realise you could get them for literally £60 though! its been a while and my mechanical knowledge is awful but isn't the additional cost if the "head is skimmed". I might be talking nonsense :p
