Asus rampage III Extreme

If there is a new BIOS how come it isn't listed on their website? I just checked and there is only the 402 BIOS :(.

They upload it to their FTP site first, then link it on their main support sites, which goes through some approval process and translation depending on localisation of the site before they are live. So you can wait for it to go live in the next week on their main support site or download it now. :)

You can go through the FTP link and compare what's there for other motherboards and what's on the main support site.

They put the bios in the FTP area before release. Given that it’s evening in Taiwan I would expect to see it on the download page in the next day or so.

If anyone's desperate for it, drop me a message in TRUST - Use at your own risk etc etc.

I really want to use it but I am worried about voiding my warranty in any way. Do you know when it will be released publicly?

Also can you give us a heads up on the release log?

Cheers VK :).

4-Way SLI anyone?

ASUS ROG Xpander is simply a PCI-Express daughter card for the ASUS Rampage III Extreme. The circuit board comes with four PCI Express x16 slots and two Nvidia NF200 PCI-Express bridges. These circuits take the 32 available PCIe 2.0 lanes of the Intel X58 chipset and expand them to 64 lanes, divided across the four PCI Express x16 slots on the daughter board. In the end this enables you to connect four graphics cards with maximal PCIe x16 bandwidth.

ASUS ROG Xpander only has one real use, to enable 4-way SLI on ASUS Rampage III Extreme. Quad-SLI with dual GTX 295 or the coming NVIDIA D12U-15 works without ROG Expander. They already have an integrated NF200 chip (also known as BR04).

The reason ASUS has designed a separate daughter board for Rampage III Extreme is that Nvidia demands that motherboards supporting 4-way SLI has to use two NF200 bridge chips, and an official 4-way license key. According to our sources this adds about $100 to an already expensive motherboard.

With Nvidia's flagship GeForce GTX 480 we have seen the ways of 4-way SLI and how it can break records like no other in the right hands. This is the reason ASUS developed ROG Xpander. The number of consumers that are interested in 4-way SLI isn't big enough to justify the added cost, but the extreme users should not have turn any other way but just upgrade to get 4-way SLI support with their ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard.

Judging from the information we have the reason for Rampage III Extreme not getting 4-way SLI from the start wasn't just the cost. The two bridge chips does enable higher bandwidth, but also higher latencies that most non-4-way SLI systems would be crippled by. Second generation PCIe x8 offers enough bandwidth to keep most users happy.

One of few Intel X58 motherboards that support 4-way SLI from factory is Gigabyte GA-X58-UD9 and if you compare the price with ASUS Rampage III Extreme you see the extra costs we're talking about. Gigabyte's motherboard is listed for $700 at Newegg.com, while Rampage III Extreme is listed at $380.

At the same time the Nvidia NF200 bridge chips adds 12W power consumption, each, which is actually more than some low-end graphics cards consume. On a positive note, no power will be taken from the motherboard, but all power comes through three 4-pins molex power connectors and one 6-pin PCIe connector.

Even if ASUS didn't see the point of supporting 4-way SLI from factory with Rampage III Extreme it is aware of the customers that do want 4-way SLI, and that is why ROG Xpander is expected to appear in stores in the near future.

Considering just the chips and license cost near $100 it won't be cheap, but if you can afford four GeForce GTX 480 graphics cards it's a minor problem.

Hi

Is there any news yet on when OcUK will finally have normal stock for this board or will it be on limited pre-order for some time yet??? The reason why i`m asking is because i`m now finally purchising my hardware componants for my complete new computer build and so far I have ordered the hardware below which should be deliverd on monday and i`ll be ordering the rest of the components for new computer build ones I can actually get one of these boards.

Thanks for responding.

Think you could be in for a long wait - but send a webnote to check perhaps anyway????

Hi

I take it i`m probably best just to pre-order this board and order the rest of my components along with it and then wait it out
in the pre-order queue for the board if i`m wanting to get the complete components for my new build as soon as posible???

Thanks for responding.

Why not it is what most of us did. OcUK deliver a great service and you will probably be waiting for it from elsewhere as well.

You can always ask here about where you will be in the queue, etc.:

and tell them that you want the components shipped first.

:)

I spoke to Asus this week and they're not expecting normal levels of stock until at least the middle of June. Given that we are still taking pre-orders at a decent rate I'd likely say it will be the end of June before free stock is on sale.

It's an absolute disgrace how poorly ASUS have anticipated demand of this product. I ordered my build six weeks ago (have everything else sitting here for at least a month) and I'm still waiting for even OcUK to get stock of this damn board. The "It'll be worth waiting for" argument is long dead now, I'm just ****ed at this stage.

Even though I have my board, I totaly agree with you mate. It is quite ridiculous that the board went into production in March and 2 months later they still hardly have any in stock. I'd like to know why tbh?

Well, I've now put in a pre-order for this board and along with the rest of the hardware components for my new build.

I just hope I won`t be waiting too long for the board.

Good luck - hope it is not too long a wait. Post some pics once it is built.

Got the board last week, but now i have to wait for my case (in bits), to come back from powder coating, then its building time...
