What is it with people who avert their gaze when they speak or whilst being spoken to?

I just had a guy in for a programme and he looked at my eyes about 3 times, the rest of the time he spent looking at the floor.

I don't get it.

inb4 your ugly and you had something on your face. Apart from sporting an awesome beard there is nothing on my face, and I'm bloody gorgeous.

also inb4 gay... I'm not gay. :p

They’re either shifty, lack confidence, are trying to tell you something or fancy you. Take your pick. :D

It is weird imho if you hold constant eye contact unless you are attempting to pull or it is very serious you should be occasionally looking away.

Made me think about it too much now. gonna be acting weird.

Conversely, why do you want to be looked at eye to eye in a conversation?

I personally find it easier to think what to say when not staring directly at someone.

It's a strange one.

I wasn't staring him out with a ferice gaze or anything, but when I'm speaking I'll look at the person I'm addressing, not in a perverted way.
45 mins I spent with him, it's odd not to look at a person for 45 mins...

It just seemed rude if you know what I mean?

Quite simple really.
He's the opposite of you, he prefers not to gaze at your face whilst talking as much as you do, is it that hard to understand people are different or are you very closed minded?

Rude to assume he should look at you more like it, some strange attempt at trying to say what's right and wrong to do in social situations, forbid anyone to do what they prefer.

So if you speak to someone and they look at their phone while you talk, you wouldn't mind? ;)

Sometimes its awkward you don't wanna stare at someone too much but you don't want to look like your not paying attention either and then you don't know where to look.

I try to make eye contact when they've made a point or to confirm I've taken in what they are saying, etc. but I don't stare at someone unless I'm trying to talk them down heh.

I find it hard to maintain eye contact for extended periods. It is simply lack of confidence. And I've noticed that the few times I make an effort to, the other person starts averting their gaze instead.

Or maybe they were always averting their gaze and I didn't notice because I wasn't watching their eyes...

It's certainly hard to find a decent balance, i used to be terrible for not looking people in the eye when speaking to them, was a confidence thing i'm sure.

I really tried to change that but sometimes feel i have gone too far the other way when talking to people and they look away to break the gaze :p
