Hi,

Following from my last thread (thanks everyone for your help) I’m going to dive a couple of options and see what sits best with me.

The very different short list currently sits at (origional budget was~ £7k)-

• 986 Boxster S~ £10k
• 745i~ £8k
• CL500~ £7k

The Boxster S is coming out top on paper, fastest, looks good (although could use the facelift lights) but the insides lack a little. I’m 25 with a good job and no real commitments so it fits the bill well.

The one I’m going to look at (mainly because its local) is a 2001 Manual, electric seats, full leather and CD mulit-changer. It’s up for 10k with 69k on the clock, one owner from new and always taken to the local Porsche garage.

I’ve read most of the buying guides and reviews. What you suggest that I look out for though? Or any other buying advice?

A friend who’s a mechanic will be coming with me.

Thanks,

Eddie

If you want a soft top, get the Boxster. If you want a limo utterly loaded with toys, get the 745i.

Never ;). I'll drive them and see what I get on with best. Any ideas what to look out for on the Boxster? Is the origional S a good buy?

Get a later boxster with the glass rear window, if you want a boxster.

I wouldnt want a bottom of the pond E65 745i therefore I'd probably go with the Boxster. £10k isnt bottom of the Boxster market.

That's what I'm thinking. £8k is starting money for a Boxster S, £10k should get me a nice early example.

I've gone to www.Boxa.net for more info on the 986.

If the E46 and E39 look dated what does that make a Boxster of exactly the same shape and style as the one released back when P reg was new?!

I think the BMWs look older because they are more everyday (I don’t want to say common) cars. The 987 is also very similar to the 986 also. The E39 and E60 and now the F10 are very different.

If you look on the boxa.net forum theres a comprehensive buying guide on there. I used it when i bought mine and it took me a good hour to go through all the checklists! Worth it for objectivity though.....they can look awfully shiney when you first see and drive them!

You may have more look than me - every S I looked for at £10k had flaws. Either slightly tatty, missing service history, a tiptronic gearbox, dodgy looking owners (seriously!) etc. I came to the conclusion that £13k was the minimum for a good 3.2S, at least around here, and ended up going for a mint 44k mile 2.7 instead.
