my res is 1680x1050,
my 9800gtx+ is starting to show it age,i need another card thinking of getting ati 4890 now,
cant afford 5850.

5770 should be fine at that res?

might strugle in dx 11 tho. so might be worth looking down the 4890 route as more power just no dx 11.

5830 can be had for under £200 now also if look around. so might be worth a look but i still this if no dx 11 is needed then 4890 best bang for buck

don't want to disagree with the above comment, think the 5770 is great.

but on page94 of this months custompc mag, after a DX11 card round-up.

they show what card is suggested for each monitor size, and at that resolution the 5850 is recommended, with a warning against the 5830 because its cut down a bit to much.

Yeh, but by the time he saves up, the refresh will be out and the 5850 will be old tech!

^^

Depends how quickly he manages to lay hands on the cash. :) Just because it might be, by that time old tech, it wouldn't make it redundant. My X2 is pretty old now but I see little need to upgrade.

If you can't wait and aren't fussed about dx11 then a 4890 will do fine.

5770 is a good card, but the amount of performance boost vs cost upgrading from a 9800GTX+ simply not worth it.

Assuming he can sell the 9800GTX+ for £50 and grab a 5770 1GB for £125, the upgrade cost would be £75 for a mere 20~30% boost in performance.

I have a 9800GTX+ too, and I wouldn't consider anything short of a 5850 for an upgrade (or unless 5830 can be grab for £140 or less).

im going for a xfx 4890,on fleabay, they seem to go for £100ish,if i can sell mine for £50 ill be happy.

Yea...that would be a good move for upgrade too. dx11 is nothing but overrated at the moment. With the little amount of tessellations they are using for current dx11 game titles, they don't look much better than dx10.

Hey, tell me about it, I'm still running an 8800GT (as in sig)! I thought it might struggle with my new monitor rez of 1920x1080, but it's still holding it's own.
Enough to make me wait for the new tech later this year.

It was a slightly tongue in cheek post, hence the ^^. :)

LOL me and you still chugging away on our 4870x2. All the games i play dont seem to break a sweet apart from BFBC2.

Indeed m8, still is a good card. I've had my niggles with it but have decided to stick with it. I will upgrade when I need to rather than want to. I spent enough during 08 and to a slightly lesser degree, 09. :)

Hmmm...might be tempted though when nvidia release a dual gpu card. :o

If you think thats bad. I'm still chugging away on a x1950xtx crossfire system that I built back in Christmas 2006. Though I only play rFactor on it at 1920x1080 with 6xAA and lots of cars in sight etc
