First I would like to say hello this as this is my first post.

I have been reading up and I would like to try and overclock my e8400 to about 3.6ghz by upping the FSB. I am hoping this will give me a little more bang playing games and speed up my graphic design work. I will probly get a Gelid Tranquillo cooler to keep it nice and quiet.

Can anyone suggest a Mobo and tell me wether 4gb ocz ddr2 800 ram will do me any good?

Looking to spend £30-100 on mobo.

Thank you in advance for the tips.

The foxcon dos'nt officially support 1600fsb, but can be reaced via overclocking, which generally means messing with more settings.

It would still easily do it, so if money is a factor then get the foxcon, it will still do the overclock your wanting.

What if I wanted to push it to 4ghz at some point?
Is this to bold? Quite conviced that the p5q will be a good buy but I have one stupid problem with it, the atx power socket for the board is in an akward place. Normaly the socket is on the right edge so the cable can be routed easly. Does anyone else have a pic of how to get around this?

Sorry for being so picky, I am realy greatful for the advice.

Yeh that socket is'nt the best, its like where mine is on my MSI board, i just cable tie that cable to the back of my case, and its outa the way so not so much a problem.

If you where planning on trying for 4ghz then the P5Q would be the better option in my opinion. Not saying the other won't do it, but you are more likely on the P5Q, as it supporsts 1600 from the start so it will have more head room, i think a mate has had his up to 2000 fsb, my msi is the same supports 1600 but iv had it upto 2000 aswell.

So either board will be fine, but if aiming for higher overclocks then i would have to say the P5Q.

For these chips, I can't recommend the P5Q deluxe enough (or pro/turbo for cheaper options). As you can see, I got my chip up to 4.5GHz very easily, just had to adjust cpu volts and dram dividers to get there. Board is absolutely stellar, but to get further than 3.6GHz you're porobably going to want to upgrade your RAM to 1066MHz stuff to avoid being limited to 400fsb. 4GHz is such an easy OC with these chips it's just silly not to go for it.

The P5Q SE doesn't have crossfire like the P5Q deluxe but is about £50 cheaper but still seems to have the OC potential with 8-phase power to the CPU and 1600fsb. The Gigabyte lite has only 4-phase power which is why I got the deluxe (se was not available then). So without reading up on the overclocking of the P5Q se I'd recommend that.

As for the PSU connector placement, its quite close to the PSU in a convention case.

Unless u have killer 800mhz ram that will clock to 1000mhz, still allowing you to use 1:1 and a 500fsb :p

But yeh not all of us can be that lucky, so 1066mhz would be better if aiming for high clocks on the cpu, but for 4ghz your fsb would have to be 445, running 1:1 that would make the memory run at 890mhz, now i would be very surprised if your memory coudl'nt do that, u may have to loosen the timings but id still be surprised if it could'nt do it.

But the easiest option would be 1066mhz stuff or higher, the P5Q can use upto 1200 mhz memory.

The memory I currently have is

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_platinum_revision_2_dual_channel

Dident wanna spend to much more money on this rig, because if i spend so much i might as well spend a bit more and get an i5 or whatever is coming next.

My current plan is to get a Fractal R2 case so its nice and quiet. Don't know if it would still be quiet and cool enough at 4ghz. I want to keep the dust covers on and things like that you see.

That said, i think i would be happy with a little overclock but who knows what will happen once i get a taste for it. I may be selling my body for watercooling loops in a month.

I would be highly surprised if that memory won't do 900mhz +, infact id be shocked.

Timmings may have to be loosened but its still doable.

Id stick with the memory u have, get the P5Q and the fractal, play about with settings and jobs a good un.

As u can see from my sig link, my E8400 is @ 3.6ghz 24/7 on low volts, i could put it to 4ghz or even 4.5ghz, but 3.6 is more then enough for my uses, that and i never have to worry about heat issues.

Did anyone mention it yet? When I was researching the Asus P5Q deluxe it was said to stay off the 1:1 divider. It even says something in the bios about less than 800Mhz RAM not supported.

I got some low voltage ram gskill PI 8800, and run it at 5:6 1081DDR2 with 3.8Ghz q9550. The ram is rated for 1150 and to hit 4Ghz I'd need 1130Mhz out of it IIRC.

I once tried to boot with 4dimms at 1:1 and it didn't post but at 5:6 it posted fine.

There is still ram similar to what I got at the place I bought it.

Then if that is the case he will simply have to just go straight to 400fsb, and 1:1 on the mem divider, to counter that.

And it will do that any day of the week on the stock Vcore, mine does it below stock. Then its all a matter of how high his 800mhz memory will go to how far his clock will go. Well that and heat aswell.

I read up on my memory, and people seem to think if it says 800 then it wont go much higher. So I probably wont risk it and just stick to a nice and easy OC as I don’t want to buy new memory. I like the idea of all the maths balancing out i.e fsb vs memory speed.

I will eventualy post pictures with new case, I warn you, i am not a fan of flashing lights. In my book the more subtle the better.

Thanks again for all the advice, can't wait till next months pay!

Don't belive everything u read, without testing it you will never know.

My memory is 800mhz, own shop branded from another online e-tailer, but made by mushkin.

I thought these won't go much over stock speeds at all, but boy was i shocked
@4,4,4,12 timings my memory will do 800-900mhz
@5,5,5,15 timings my memory will do 901mhz +
@5,5,5,18 timings my memory will do 1000mhz

All above speeds and timmings where done on 2.1v, so as you can see don't just go by face value, allways go your own testing aswell.

Now when the time comes we will help you in both getting the cpu higher, and the memory if needed.

So as u can see, with testing i found that i can get an extra 200mhz out of my memory if i ever needed too, i don't do that as i run them stock as its easier, but used to run them faster for benching sessions, but got bored of that now lol.

Hello everyone,
I finaly have bought all the things and started overclocking.
spec as follows

e8400 @ 3.6ghz
2x4gb corsair dominator 1066mhz ddr2
p5q se2
ati 5770

raven 2 case
freezer pro7 2

Votlage is 1.18 on the cpu
2.1 on the ram rest is on auto.

Tempretures on cpu never realy go past 45degrees

Only thing is I have gotten 2 crashes in games that cause coloured bars to appear on screen and freeze up. I figured it was graphics related so i set the pcie speed from 100 back to auto.

Would like to hear anyones thoughts aslo I think i want to push it to 4ghz.

thanks
