Suggestions on what to do: Hawaii, Sydney, Cairns, Hong Kong

thanks for that - keep forgetting that it's their winter time, although Sydney should be around 16-19C according to the internet...

of course Cairns remains between 27-32C all year round

Sydney will be fine, I was walking around in a tshirt, but the mountains are a different matter.

Cairns is lovely in July, arguably the best time to visit as it gets very wet and very hot in Summer.

Coach tours are fine Fox. You just hate them because they're not car-shaped. :p

Agreed on the Weather. Locals told me the best time for Sydney was September. I don't recall Cairns being that hot though (I hate the type of heat we get here but dry heat is OK).

Going where you want when you want with a good guide book is better than being driven around on a bus. You are free to explore how you want, not how the other 52 people on the bus want.

I'll grant you that one - that's my single biggest frustration. On the other hand you don't have to worry about long drives and finding your way (though, to be fair, Australia is pretty easy providing you take sensible precautions).

The coach tour up the Stuart Highway was great for that - all hotels pre-arranged, the best stops selected, food sorted where necessary, and best of all someone else drove the 2,600+ miles.

coach tours can be hit and miss
in thailand a "VIP" coach is anything but VIP lol
normally I rent a car on holiday (have driven from vancouver to miami in the past, and through most of Italy) but thinking of chilling more on this holiday

I drove a total of 7,200km and it made the trip even better, frankly :)

Doing an 700km drive along a lonely highway is just yet another awesome experience you pick up in such a great country.

damn it I'm tempted now, though I have heard horror stories about driving in oz, eg getting stranded and dying in the desert - wud spoil the holiday

That's usually called being an idiot and not going prepared for the conditions. Always check a car over thoroughly before taking it out into the outback. Make sure the car is in good condition and you have plenty of fuel, water and so forth - and lots of water for you to drink too.

Common sense people ought to apply in any country tbh.

PS - Our coach had a blow-out. Fortunately that happened right outside a hotel but nonetheless the driver handled it himself.

Bit long in Honolulu to be honest. You could do some island hopping though.

Stuff to see in Oahu - Pearl Harbor, North shore (make sure you stop at a shrimp truck), Kaaawa Valley, Hananuma Bay, Diamond Head, Waikiki beach.

That's about it really. Maui/the Big Island are worth seeing though so I'd argue that island hopping is a good idea.

Sydney: We liked Taronga zoo, strolling around the bars and restaurants. It's a bit weird actually thinking back, there aren't THAT many highlights I can pick out from our time there, but we really liked it. You know, the kind of city break where you can just kinda mooch around a lot sampling some good food and drink, bit of shopping, take a boat trip, relax in a nice hotel etc. Sort of place we would like to live.

Hong Kong: Make use of the Metro, it's cheap and air conditioned :) Nice views from The Peak. in 25hrs you won't have much time to do things, we were there for about 36hrs i think.

25hrs isn't a lot of time, but you can visit the major tourist sites in a day (IMO) as the MTR is pretty quick.

Lantau Island
* Tian Tan Buddha using Ngong Ping 360 (cable car)

HK Island
* Victoria Peak
* Lan Kwai Fong

Kowloon
* View of HK Island/Victoria Harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui and Avenue of Stars
* Ladies' Market

Can only comment on Australia but , Defin go for trip to hunter valley wine tasting , ATT tours do a fairly good day trip . Takes in some awesome scenery maybe scrap Blue mountains for reasons said above and go to Hunter valley instead? Also IMO skip Brisbane its good to live there but not a huge amount to see or do as a tourist IMO

Also Sydney Fish market is worth a look , go early lunch time though as it does get very busy! Just something different which gets overlooked sometimes, can double that up with having a look in Sydney's Casino on the monorail

Also if you do ever get a chance give Western Australia alook. It hasn't been heavily promoted , the distances are huge between towns , but god is it worth it. Karajini National Park is up there with one of the most amazing things I've ever done.

Fox your in for a treat if you do go WA. South of Perth is particularly rewarding if you go in the summer time .
