Hi all, I have a HP Pavillon DV6 2106EA laptop contains -

Intel i7 720QM 1.6Ghz Boost up to 2.6Ghz
nVidia gForce GT230M with 1GB DDR3 upto 2500mb graphic memory
4GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

And my problem is that after installing GTA4 there was lag! When I first turned on GTA4 it detected my hardware and put the graphic setting to HIGH. When I turned on the game there was a lot of lag so I eventually changed the details to LOW and to lowest possible resolution 800x640 and it was still impossible to play! (?)
I think this is imposibble that i7 cant run this game smoothly - any tips?

Try running the game in Windows XP (Service Pack 3) compatibility mode, sometimes helps with Win 7 64 and Vista 64. :)

The game is extremely system demanding and even brings my i7 desktop with 6gb ram and 5870 into sub 30 fps in heavily populated areas on high. Your only option is to drop the traffic density and showers down a lot which seem to really cripple performance when your travelling at high speed on the game due to the game engines awful precache system.

Hi, thanks for answer! I tried it - no help. The annoyung thing is that the game runs smoothly 30fps but every 5 or 10 seconds there is a millisecond when the screen freezes and I can't stand that! I mean this laptop ain't bad is it?

You've got a decent enough laptop, it's just that game is very demanding.

There's just so much going on, your cpu/gpu will struggle to keep up.

You may also want to try and update your drivers, it may give you a small boost, but don't hold your breath

GTA4 is SERIOUSLY demanding, ignoring modded games like Oblivion I'd say it's probably the toughest game out there on hardware (even more so than Crysis).

Looking at the GT230M it is pretty underpowered by desktop standards, not only does it only have 48SP (compared to 200+ on the desktop GTX2xx range) it also only has 128bit memory bus.

Must be one of the most poorly optimised games ever.

Regardless of how demanding it is, it's a stretch to expect playable framerates in many modern games on a gt230m. It's basically on par with a 9600mGT, and my laptop with 9600mGT struggles with many modern games at the same resolution.

get it fully patched up if you havent, it should run much nicer. as already said, the 230m isnt going to be able to cut the mustard with gta4. my 5770 has a hard enough time

this +1

i think that card is a little low on power for the likes of GTA4. yes its very cpu intensive but you can't forget GPU power aswell.

I think its the new patch because i get stuttering with my 5770 on gta4 since the new patch and with my laptop its unplayable with my GT120m 1 gig and q6500.
