We have a neighbour who moved in about a year ago and bought with him some chickens and a rooster.

Now we live in London and there are foxes everywhere, they spend 90% of their night trying to get at said chickens and rooster. This leads to most nights from about 2am the rooster crowing until dawn.

This has been keeping us up for a while, and some of the other neighbours who are friends with the owner mentioned it to him and he was of the opinion that it wasn't his issue. He also seems to be a bit of a nasty piece of work.

Because he is known as a bit nasty, and because some of the neighbours are friends with his wife, we have all been forced to put up with the rooster; I reached the end of my tether last week and called the council. They told me I have to fill out a noise log but weren't exactly clear on what would happen from that.

What will the council do once I have filled the log out and how long will it take? It says that I must be prepared to have the log used in court, the last thing I want is for the guy to find out it was me who reported him - can he find out who did it?
 
I don't know how much help this will be but remember reading somewhere in the deeds of my house that i'm not allowed to keep live animals (chickens etc) in the garden.
I imagine yours would be the same as his if it is the same style house, but I don't know how you could enforce this.
 
This country boy obviously doesn't know about the London way. Foxes will get at anything if they can. What kind of pen does this idiot have the chickens in?

Surely this neighbour can hear the rooster all night also?

Not a clue but hes had it since last september so whatever it is must be fox proof...unfortunately.

Crazy.. I hope the council sort it out for you. I would guess that the report you filed is treated as confidential, unless as you said it goes to court.. and you want to give evidence.
 
The council is not allowed to give out who makes a complaint but in 99% of cases the person who is being complained about can work out who did the complaining and then all hell breaks lose.

Sorry but that is how it works in the real world.

We in the country get weird animal noises all night long. Your ears sort of attune to it.

I don't want a brick through my window! If it got that far I'd have to back down.

I was hoping that the council would send someone round to monitor the noise one evening, but I don't know if they do this (although I assume they have people that check up on nightclubs), any ideas?

I'm not sure they could work it out - I don't know them personally and this is a built up area - it could be one of at least 15 houses.

I think we have given ourselfs enough time to attune to it. Where I live is really really quiet and then the sudden shrieking of the rooster will start and wake half the road.

To some extend. I lived next to a railway line from 0-14 and the goods trains would literally shake the house every couple of hours throughout the night.. but I wouldn't wake up from them, the sound was almost comforting. But that was after many years of adjustment plus I was a child at the time and you could say I just put up with it.

This is kinda different.. it is like a small/medium dog barking all night long next door. Next door you country folk may ask? :p.. that is probably around 10 metres from the ground floor window you are looking out from, most likely not even that.
 
Keeping a rooster in a built up area really shouldn't be permitted... the council have held up complaints about people keeping roosters here and enforced removal so hopefully same will happen for you. Suprised the foxes haven't got them tho - I used to live just outside Bromley and the foxes would get into anything.
 
i had an issue with noisey neighbours, though it wasnt animal related just music.

the first couple of times i called was in the daytime after the event - then i got a case officer who indeed told me pretty much what you have been told and sent me a log which i started filling out.

However the next time i called was in the middle of the night at 3:00am as the noise was actually happening - then it was a different story they asked if they'd be able to witness it now - i said yes - they got to me around 5:00am (a woman from the noise patrol and a security guard)and the noise was indeed occuring and she took my details, went next door and spoke to them and i have not had any issues since.

best thing is if the person causing the issue is a council tennant as this means the council can be more agressive but even if the noisey neighbour owns the property they can still be prosecuted.

it adds to the weight if other people report it as witnesses / multiple victims make the council pull their finger out.
 
Create a backdated noise log, fabricating wherever needed, we did this when complaining to the council about our next door neighbours after realising that they would ask us to create a log book.
 
Poison the chickens and rooster? He might replace them but you can rinse and repeat. Dunno if that's viable. Anyone who brings chickens and a rooster to a built-up area is an obvious ****, you shouldn't feel the slightest bit guilty.
 
Invite him around for a BBQ get the bbq ready, and shout DAMN I FORGOT THE BLOODY CHICKEN, oh mate, you have one in your garden don't you. can we just use that, I will pop down to tescos tomorrow and by you another one.

I started crating one on 1st May and there is an entry practically every night - I'll just transpose it onto their form.

I am just wondering how long it will take them to do something after they get the form.

It shouldn't take them too long as you have a long period of time logged and a consistent pattern of noise. It won't be instant as they will have to talk to him and give him the oppertunity to stop the noise. You argument would be much better if you could get other people in the are to support you as then it is not an isolated complaint. You must be prepared for him finding out who objected as people normally do, but remember you have done nothing wrong except protect you right to live in peace. One thing I would say is have you ever broached the subject with him? I would be pretty disapointed in my neighbours if the first thing I heard about a noise complaint was the council knocking on the door.
