why is f.t.w starred out ?

Should just be an instant ban on anyone using text speak tbh...

Should be an instant ban on people not knowing the difference between txt spk and internet acronyms. .

i suspect it is because it has a dual meaning otherwise tbh and iirc would also suffer.

the sual meaning ?. How about doing something beginning with F to The World.

RB

nb. smilies are pain to try and do on a mobile :-/.

IIRC it was banned because it was getting incredibly annoying having people posting "ESV" (+1) all the time.

Some of the other words in the filter were added for the same sort of reason, or because we got fed up of people forgetting their keyboard normally had a full set of vowels included free of charge.
There was a stage when it seemed some users were using a totally alien language, and it took longer trying to read their shortened posts than it took to respond.

So can we have the word 'lol' filtered as well then?
Or am i the only one who finds it overly used and far too annoying.

Because some people were using it every other sentence, and it got really old really quick.

As a forum, OcUK has a habit of really dragging excess mileage out of jokes and memes that are well past their sell by date - see Paedobear, lolcats, for the win, ceiling cat, "Thanks for the info", too long didn't read, nuke it from orbit, kill it with fire, punch her in the ovaries, smash her pasty etc etc etc etc etc etc.

So the Dons lose patience and just ban it before people start chewing their keyboards with frustration at seeing the same old jokes all the time.

So mods are now the arbiters of trends aswell peace and justice now?

Censorship f.t.w.

Would you prefer everyone to write Laugh-Out-Loud if they find something funny? I assume you want LMAO (hate this even more, as well as ROFL) to be blocked as well?

Is this some sort of guide on how to make new friends when joining a forum for the first (Well, maybe not the first, perhaps thats the point!) time, given your registration date? :p

For the win and too long didn't read aren't memes, and they're not text speak. Ok, so we should encourage people to read the post before asking a question, but banning tl dr seems excessive and unecessary imo, just make it a forum convention to actually read the post, and if someone asks a question which is answered in the post point it out, no need to ban people for using an acronym.

As for f.t.w., I really don't think that is necessary or even justified. It may represent "for the win", but the acronym and the whole phrase have different meanings and connotations, and as a phrase it doesn't really make sense. For 99% of the time it is used appropriately and not excessively. Do you really want us to type out "I think that purple cats/huge hats/tiny muffins are entertaining/amazing/hilarious in my opinion"? The acronym fills a void which doesn't get filled in normal english language because in the development of the english language nobody needed to leave a continuous statement up for others to view and respond to, outside of letters, which were a formal affair (don't say this forum is a formal affair as well).

If anything should be banned it's "lol", which I noticed in my writing has started to just aimlessly replace punctuation and is definitely abused enough to lose any meaning.

Yes, I believe I would. At least if people had to write it out in full then it wouldn't be the substitute for punctuation that so many appear to treat it as currently. Actually I suspect I'd prefer people to use "haha" as that has been the standard device for signifying laughter in written works for a significant period of time.

However I don't really want it banned or anything else I can currently think of, while I'm in favour of certain things being banned on occasion (possibly just for a period) to discourage the inevitable overuse of specific memes or sayings I'm also quite capable of ignoring things that irritate me and using my own in-built filter to skim over them.

Writing ftw is just an example of PC+1 unless you're actually adding content, if you're adding content then why do you need the initialisation as it should be obvious you agree with the previous?

tl:dr is just plain rude, the person using it is adding absolutely nothing to the thread other than another PC+1 and managing to be dismissive of the original poster at the same time. If someone finds the post too long or incomprehensible for whatever reason then they can either give some constructive criticism or not bother to respond - why have the rudeness too?

Oh how sad the day will be when 'For The Win' is no longer considered an internet meme and not text speak.

I would be up for banning 'tbh' too because why would you say something expecting other people to think you're lying.
