Me and the GF are thinking of heading to Austria in August for a short holiday, maybe a combination of city break and the great outdoors. I really have no idea about Austria so I'm looking for parts of the country that we can see for the most spectacular outdoor scenary / walks.

So any tips? :)

Last year I went to Berchtesgaden (on a stag do) which is in some beautiful mountains and has Hitler's Eagle's Nest for a bit of history thrown in.

The view's from the Eagle's Nest are extraordinary - well they would have to be for the Nazi's to bother to build up there. Egomania does get things done.

We did some white water rafting and went up the mountains, plenty of beer garden action. It's an hour outside Salzburg by train so we did half the time in the mountains and half the time in the city.

Where abouts are you going?

I can't comment much about anyting else but my mother's from a small village called Gramastetten near Linz, if you really want to see some absolutely beautiful country side and life that hasn't been spoiled by tourists.

There are many places you can go for a walk with a great view, a few lovely cafes with spectacular food and a couple of historic things like churches etc.

Although if you do decide to go, find out where everything is first and if they are still open, there's a few places that are "off the beaten" trail so to speak, as well as a lovely place to go swim in a natural river/waterfall area which is sort of hidden from public view.

Been there many a time and now I really want to go :(

Another mention of Berchtesgaden, I used to go camping there fairly often and it's a wonderful area.

Yep, and to the OP don't get the wrong impression that I went there on a stag so it must be rough and full of pros (unfortunately that was not the case :p) I think we were the first stag do ever to go there.

Well I went to a festival in St. Polten last year, and then stayed in Vienna itself for 5 days.

You say scenery, so a city break obviously isn't what you are looking for, but what I can say is that not only is Vienna truly lovely (and not as expensive as I was led to believe, though not cheap), the section of Austria between Vienna and St. Polten (it's a town about 60 miles out from Vienna) was astoundingly beautiful, at least from the train.

Never been so captivated by the scenery before!

Hmm isn't Berchtesgaden in Germany? I'm not too fussed, just wanted to check! :)
Yes, it's also not that far from Munich if you fancy poppy there for a day. You could do Munich, Berchtesgaden and Salzburg or something. It will also give you more opportunities for cheap flights to Munich.
