I'm screwed right? [scammed on eBay]

The guy had a good rating (300+) and asked if I would mind paying via cheque as opposed to PayPal.

AWOOGA! AWOOGA! Run away!

That address you posted doesn't happen to be Leigh park does it? In which case if he is from there no group of keyboard bashers are going to be effective as you will end up with your head caved in. Awful awful place by all accounts.

Of course the bank can do something. It's simple. You go in to your bank and say that a cheque has been paid out of your account and you can't remember what it was for, could they obtain a copy of it for you.

They will, and the copy that they give you will also show the associated credit slip that went with it. From this, you will know:

The Bank
The sort code and account number
Where it was paid in

etc, etc

Cool, well I head that route after I have run through this 'obtaining by deception' route that the police suggested.

You could do it now, its a free service (was last time I checked). The police would only do the exact same thing if they take up the case. If you can provide them with this info already you are only helping the situation.

Make sure you ask for the associated credit slip. They may get funny about this though. Sometimes the cheque copy will naturally come with the credit slip, other times, it wont. If you explain the situation they may be more accommodating.

which is of what help? they can not reverse it or put it as fraud without the police. Once police are involved they can get that info anyway.

Quick update - got an email from eBay today. The case that I opened on eBay for not receiving the item has been closed. As a "one time courtesy" they have decided to refund me the cash via PayPal. Honestly can't believe it, I had written the money off to be honest. eBay have gone up in my estimations a lot now!
