Of course the bank can do something. It's simple. You go in to your bank and say that a cheque has been paid out of your account and you can't remember what it was for, could they obtain a copy of it for you.
They will, and the copy that they give you will also show the associated credit slip that went with it. From this, you will know:
The Bank
The sort code and account number
Where it was paid in
etc, etc
Phone your bank, and pay the service charge (£15 for Natwest) to cancel the cheque?
Why can't you just cancel the Cheque?

Quick update - got an email from eBay today. The case that I opened on eBay for not receiving the item has been closed. As a "one time courtesy" they have decided to refund me the cash via PayPal. Honestly can't believe it, I had written the money off to be honest. eBay have gone up in my estimations a lot now!
