My n96 has broken..Looking at buying an N900

Indeed, as I said, the N900 is a phone/computer in a category all on it's own. It's unfair to compare anything in the current market to it.

Apart from the battery life and the inconsistent support of portrait-mode, why are they all saying it's not a good phone? I've always been puzzled, read plenty of reviews, all of them raving, but they'd all end "well, great mobile computer, not the best phone"!

Only because its given a sound pasting by post of the market these days. It was a nice idea.

Well, it isn't really trying to compete with the rest of the market.

I agree completely it is given a pasting at being a phone, it is far more like a computer than a phone. Thus why it isn't fair to draw general comparisons, like you can with Android being better than iPhone OS :p

As I have said already, Meego should be a competitive version of it, with better support, etc.

the 1.2 update for the N900 is out in the UK. Over the air is about 115mb. :)

Updating now :) :)

As I said in the N900 thread, some nice improvements but this is the last update, and there's no portrait mode for the entire phone (you don't need it, but it would have been a nice touch) :(

Couple of conflicting news reports on whether MeeGo will be on the N900 after all:

Yeah:

But no:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/nokia-updates-n900-to-version-1-2-in-uk-closes-door-on-meego/

Anyway, was sure that someone in the modder community would've done it even if Nokia hadn't, the question's gonna be how well it'll work and whether it'll fix some of the yawning gaps in Maemo's current feature set (especially portrait-mode support). My Universal's slowly dying (the speaker and microphone are going, probably water damage) so I'm looking for a replacement too, but still torn between this and Android.

Curious to se what the first MeeGo handsets will be like! (Though I'm sure I'll never own a phone with a keyboard as awesome as my beloved Uni's ever again...)

This don't look good.No BME (battery management entity )

In N900 HW adaptation there is 2 problematic components that we are NOT planning to open as such; the other is BME, battery management entity from Nokia, and the other is OpenGLES implementation from SGX. You can use the device without openGLES, if you don't care about HW accelerated 3D features. Without the BME the device is practically useless.

As I said, it's been quite a battle to get Nokia to release this latest update, and I don't think they will release any more.

You'll just have to hope that Maemo.org can get it working, I'm sure they will. How good it will be, time will tell.

I re-iterate though, you are better off getting an Android phone, or waiting for a proper Meego device :p

I saw that blog post too, I think what they meant is that they will release a ROM which will support the BME and the OpenGLES, but those drivers/bits of the code WON'T be open-source, so it'll be something that the modders won't be able to tweak.

Any forums where these people hang out? I'm sure somebody's ALREADY flashed Meego onto an N900, and I'm sure they're already sharing how well it's workign under it.

Looks like the MeeGo 1.0 thats been released is only to boot to a command line
Let's remember that this the MeeGo 1.0 OS core that is code complete booting up to command line. The MeeGo Handset UX will be released in MeeGo 1.1 in Q4 2010. Development for MeeGo 1.1 Handset UX will start next month with unstable releases.

Ah, thanks, found it, Robboftw, http://talk.maemo.org/ right?

I'll just lurk on there for a few weeks, see how they get on with the new OS :)

@chaparral yeah, you're right, seems we have to wait till end of the year for a full OS, which is also when they said they'll be releasing a new handset. (I'm sure someone will try to put 1.0 on an N900 before then anyway though, what good is having a hard keyboard if not for a command-line-only OS?:D)
Question is, will my Universal last long enough, or will it fall apart and force me into making a choice between an Android and Meego platform before the dust has settled? :)
