I'm thinking of buying a new scirocco, am I crazy?

I’m leaving Praue in just under 4 weeks and my Brother is staying back for another 3 years. He has helped me with running my business over the last couple of years and has not asked for a penny. He has never had his own car so I wanted to buy him something (he really has done a lot for me and I am not always quick to appreciate it ).

Now here is what I am looking at:
White scirocco 1.4 TSI with 160 bhp (it can remap to 200 bhp:eek:)
Black Leather interior
Xenon Headlights
18 inch alloys
Parking sensors
2 Zone climate control
I will retrofit nav.

Now the list price is 21 500 (pounds)
VW will give me 7,5% off (I think I can get them to 10%) taking it down to 20k
Now as part of the government stimulus program I can claim back the VAT at 20% taking it down to 16k in total.

I think the car will be worth 12k in 3 years (if not more as used car prices are crazy here) so overall excluding running expenses it should not cost too much, but is 16k a crazy amount to pay for a fancy golf? I will finance some of it but not all.

I also looked at a fully loaded 2.0 Volvo C30 for around the same money but I think the VW looks a little nicer.

I wanted something cheap to run, small ish and reasonably good in the snow. He will not do more then 6k miles per year.

Yea, tell him he has X amount to spend and let him pick what he wants.

Have you maybe thought about asking him what he'd like that kind of money spent on?

He would love a car, how many other 22 year old boys would not?

He is happy with the scirocco but he is also quit willing to listen to other suggestions.

we had a look at the golf also as that was a lot cheaper but the scirocco looks so much nicer.

I was going to retrofit the Nav because you can buy the units for 500 quid and VW want over 2k with that car, its that or a TomTom

If you must get the Scirocco, save some money on extras and spend it on the 2.0TSI instead. He'll thank you for it, trust me. ;)

Why are you going to all the time / trouble / expense of nav when he will do less than 6,000 miles a year. Chances are that he'll know where he's going.

It's an excellent price for a Scirocco, it will be fast enough for him to enjoy it but not too fast for him to get easily underestimate the power and end up in a ditch.

I'd say go for it.

As much as I trust him, I think thats too much power to put in a kids hands (FYI he will not remap the 1.4).

Also I read this

6k miles because most of the driving will by city driving but you may have a point here.

Make sure he can actually insure and afford to run it, if you don't, he'll be coming back to you if he can't ;)

Yah, its a lot easier here, it will be insured under my company policy so anyone can drive it he will not have to be named on the policy.

.

This is what I thought also.

In his opinion or yours?

Both really, The golf worked our to around 11k new without the spec but he really likes the Scirocco

I've had my 2.0TSI for a year now and it's a great car. It's certainly got some poke. The 160 isn't too sluggish either and as you say you can remap it.

The spec looks excellent. I don't think I'd really add anything to that but I'd consider dropping the Xenons unless he does a lot of driving down unlit country lanes. The standard lights are fine. Have you considered the DSG box? It's luuuvly :)
