Hi guys,

Have been with register1.net for years now and they have always been great, uber fast support, very fast downloads etc.

I have their VDS Std right now, unfortunately a new version of the site which has client login required PHP 5.2.6 and they only run upto 5.1.6 for some rubbish reason.

So *sigh* now I have to change my hosting.

Who do you use? :) What do you like about them? etc etc

Requirements?

Fast!
Uber support
supports php 5.2.6 :p

Cheers,
Jake

I'm with TSOhost and haven't had any issues (been with them for around 18 months now).

They easily max out my modest 300kbps download speed and support has been excellent, I've had them return emails within the hour even at ungodly hours in the morning.

I don't know what version of php they're on but they've had 5.2.6 or higher for over a year now (reg1 need to get with the times :p).

Prices are very competative too.

I'm in a similar situation(i.e. looking for a host), back in march I got a free .co.uk domain for 2 year and been looking for a decent/not expensive host.

the domain is currently still locked with the company I got it through as there is a (if I recall correctly) 90days no-transfer policy.

I was thinking about hosting my photos on my own website instead of photobucket and the like, so need a host that has a decent sized disk space and traffic allowance without getting too expensive.

not sure I'll get many visitors but will provide a learning experince in photography and web designing(plus some bragging rights) I guess, still very much a novice even tho I've had a 300d for coming on 6years so a website will get me out there taking photos.

do websites provide an option for say having certain pages/files open to say friends/families only, certain pages/files to the general public etc?

godaddy

£4.13 p/month for: 10gb space, 300gb traffic.
£4.82 p/month for: 150gb space 1500gb traffic.
£10.35 p/month for: unlimited space and traffic.

Discounts if you purchase 12/24/36months.

Domain names from them are very cheap for first year (.info 61 pence!) and are pretty good when renewing too.

Ran a few sites with them over the last 5 years, rarely any issues.

Edit: Forgot to add, if anyone want's it even cheaper and doesn't mind ads, you get free hosting just buy owning a domain name through them, get the same space and bandwidth as the £4.13 p/month deal.

Ad is a strip at the top which advertises godaddy.

You can design pages todo this, some hosting companies provide you with pre built pages that can also do this, company I mentioned above have a photo uploader/gallery page with your domain which allows you to specify wether each gallery is public / private (only owner can see) or passworded.

J, I have an account with Vidahost.

At the moment it only has light use but uptime has been good, replies to support requests come back within a few minutes and they're not bad price wise.

It would seem (after running a phpinfo script) that they run 5.2.13 :)

Oooh Godaddy looks good...and cheers Andy, Vidahost seem to be the forum favourite, shall have to decide tomorrow :)

Been using Vidahost for some years now and very pleased with the service. Clear/regular comms, explanation of any outages, very quick response to any queries raised with them and on top of all that not a bad price.

another vote for TSOHost, lightning fast support (within 15 mins at 10pm), hosting upgraded within 10 mins of saying "go" etc.

For my personal hosting stuff, which consists of a few websites and a few IRC bots (Infobots, not XDCC or anything illegal like that) and a few IRSSI sessions running under screen, I use a mixture of hosting. I use a server running FreeBSD hosted by Multiplay UK. A selection of virtual Linux machines also hosted by Multiplay UK, all in London. I also have a Linux virtual machine hosted by Slicehost in Texas, and I use Amazon's EC2 / S3 cloud services for a few things.

I use www.qiq.co.uk

£20 a year and I get 10gb of space and something stupid like 1TB of bandwidth a month.

Nice company, no complaints,

Just checked the site and the current deals aren't quite so cheap, must be because I signed up 3 or more years ago.

Wow Olv that seems awesome

Just emailed them asking if they support 5.2.6 - What sort of download speeds do you get with them? Connection maxing worthy?

How quick is there support when raising queries?

Vidahost. Vidahost. Vidahost. Vidahost. Vidahost. Vidahost. ...... you get the idea.

Excellent support and service. Dom and Seb are top guys and I have not a single complaint.

I am also with TSOhost and found them to be great for hosting pages and their support is great.

I am much less impressed with Gallery2 and Gallery3 RC1.. I have found them to be way too slow. I find it bloody hard to believe that I paid only £40 a year for smugmug which is based on the other side of world.. yet TSOhost who are less than 10 miles distance from me and when running Gallery2/3 is about 5x slower than smugmug. I must be doing something wrong as I am paying £30 a month with TSOhost, I have checked out coppermine but wasn't that impressed.

What are others using as a platform for galleries?
