My sister has an old laptop that only has a 30GB hard drive and USB 1.1 ports, so she would like an external hard drive to store videos on. I know the USB 2.0 port on the hard drive is backwards compatible, but does anyone know if USB 1.1 is fast enough to stream videos over? It has a top speed of 12Mbps according to Wiki, which seems like more than enough but I don't know much of that would be overheads, etc.

Should be fine with anything up to 720p. 1080p might be pushing it, but there's only one way to find out :P

You might have trouble playing stuff like mpeg2 files though (eg, a DVD, which runs up to around the 10mbit/s mark including audio and video). But if nothing like that, then it should be fine.

could you not just increase the video buffer, maybe by 10 sec catch, therefore you should be able to what a whole tv show with a small amount of break
