GTX465 accidentally released

Thread summary:

Chap buys a Galaxy GTX470. Installs. Drivers don't quite work properly. GTX470 flicks between being a GTX470 a GTX460, but shows expected GTX465 specs (Memory, clock speeds etc are the same as GTX465). Now shows more consistently as a GTX465. Benchmark scores aren't as good as expected, but this is probably due to unoptomized drivers.

indeed, thats actually awful lol. Massive mistake on the companys part and rather unlucky the guy who bought it benchmarked the crap out of it

Surely someone out there would love to have the 1st GTX465 and would pay a bit for it.

Yes they would in order to do full benchmarks and comparisons on it a month early.

Already people are trying to buy it off him for $500, a $200 profit.

I'm wondering if they might of just put the wrong bios on a 470.

This. The more I read the thread, the more I started thinking the same. Especially when he loaded a gtx470 bios on it and he had all the right number of cores as a gtx470.

On the other hand, a gtx470 loaded with a gtx465 bios and not using the all the cores will give a reasonable approximation of how a gtx465 performs.

However, problem with this theory is that the picture of the gpu is indeed a gtx465 and not a gtx470.

So at the moment it's a mystery and has the following solutions.

1. It's a gtx465 and loading it up with a gtx470 bios gives you full gtx470 performance which is unlikely as nowadays they cut the defective pipes with a laser and don't just disable it in bios. If they did, everybody would buy a gtx465 and get a free gtx470

2. It's a gtx 470 loaded with a gtx465 bios. This makes some sense but doesn't explain how or why the gtx465 bios would disable the cores and bus speed or the fact the gpu in the pic is NOT a gtx470.

3. It's a massive hoax.

IIRC the 5870 will lock cores with a 5850 or 5830 bios. Its how they used to do it, only now they laser cut the chips too.

That picture only shows that an old version of GPU-z, doesn't know what a 470gtx is, the middle picture shows the same clocks and 1gb mem, there is no 1gb mem 470gtx, a 320mb bus CAN'T have 1GB of mem, it wouldn't work at all, so its impossible to get a 470gtx with 1GB of mem.

How can you tell that from the back of the card? I couldn't see any pics of the front of the card.

In the thread on the link. The guy took his heatsink off and posted pics of the gpu which would indeed suggest/confirm it's a gtx465 as it certainly isn't a gts480 or gtx470.

However, there was no loaf of hovis present so picture could be a fake.

Not really, if you look at the thread on overclock.net you will see that it was a mistake by Galaxy that caused this to happen.

The other thing about it being a GTX470 with a GTX465 BIOS is that the memory still reads as 1024MB whichever way - which would read as more should it actually be a GTX470.
