Phil Taylor is a legend

I know a lot of peeps don't think darts is a true sport, but I do and Phil Taylor is up there with Ali, Pele, Tiger and Bradman.

My mate phoned me up excited the say the exact same thing (well actually he compared Taylor to Tiger, Federer and Babe Ruth but you get the idea).

The guy doesn't get anywhere near the recognition he deserves outside of darts

Why he doesn't get something like Personality of the Year when there's people getting it for doing a lot less in their sport

It's not, it's a game :D.

Nobody can tell me that this guy is a sportsman.

Yes I know he's lost weight since then, but he still played professionally when he was that size. Something that involves you leaning forwards slightly and pivoting your arm around your elbow is not a sport, in my book. Snooker's not a sport, either.

That said, I respect the skill and dedication shown by Phil Taylor in being successful in his field.

What?! So why is Golf a sport? Stood over a ball, two seconds of movement swinging the club, then walking to find it. Why are a lot of the things in the Olympics considered sports, when actually looking at them, they are a single movement or simple short movement.

If you're going to make a sweeping statement about darts as to why it's not a sport, then you bring into question a lot of other so called sports too.

I consider it a sport, they may not be physically fit like most other athletes, but they are still "sportsman"

I have to agree, as much as i respect Phil Taylor it is not a sport, Sport is defined as an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, I am sorry there is nothing athletic about Darts

I have to say I agree with Robbie - however, that doesn't detract from the fact that there's an immense amount of skill involved and I have a lot of respect for that.

Any game that can be played in a pub is not a sport! :p

Pistol, rifle-shooting, archery etc is all considered a sport so I don't see why darts is any different.

And yes Taylor is epically good :D

That's fine, I'd be more than happy to question a lot of other games with the moniker of being a sport too.

It's a game where they can have the option to drink a pint whilst throwing a dart.

Any game that I can play in a pub and my skill level may be improved by drinking a pint I just cannot countenance calling a sport. It's a very skilled game, there is no doubt about that, but these men are not athletes in the conventional sense.

Phil Taylor is an amazing darts player, a collossus of his game (at one point both physically and metaphorically) but I simply can't see him as a sportsman.

It all depends on how you classify what a sport is really. It is more a sport that tests your mental strength than your physical prowess.

Its only when Phil Taylor has retired will people begin to realise his genius.

I don't know!

Let's look at it from the other side of the coin. If anything that requires some skill and involves chucking something is a sport, why isn't tiddlywinks? Or marbles?

Pistol, rifle-shooting, archery etc is all considered a sport

Considered a sport by who?

Take fishing...it's often called a sport, but from my point of view, only in the sense that hunting is a sport. It's an activity, past time, or game, but not a sport. I think the problem is that sport is a term applied too generally and like Kev_19 says, it depends how you interpret the term itself.

Well its a great spectacle for the fans. You could throw in the argument that its on Sky Sports and BBC Sport cover the BDO Darts. But i am sure someone would retort with the "Wrestling is on Sky Sports and thats hardly a sport" argument.

Also discounting darts as a sport due to the size of the players is invalid. We could spend all day posting photos of sumo wrestlers, golfers, baseball players, american footballers etc who all could do with a gastric band inserted!
