If your programming wouldn't it be better with one of those AMD hex cores (or one that can unlock to a hex core) ?

Intel are faster clock for clock. but I dealt you would get I7 for that

on a dev pc wouldn't you want to go for 6gb main memory?

also does the m/b do onboard graphics?, if not you need to spec a card as well

last point...

120mm case fans generally much quiter than 80's

Hi

Over the last year or so I've allowed myself to become outdated on system componants as I've not needed to build any PC's but now my boss has asked me if I'd build him a new PC that will run Windows 7 which he'll use for development purposes. He mainly uses MS Visual Studio but I'm guessing the PC will get used as general Office & Internet PC as well.

How does this look for a spec

I've delibratly gone for AMD as I'm more familar with AMD and can work out their price vs performance easier than I can with Intels particullarly the new i3, i5 and i7 cpu and mobo's all of which I'm clueless as to wether these are worth it someone who'll NOT be overlclocking the system one bit.

He's definetely keen on an SSD for speed and a huge storage disk. I've opted for the Green WD's 2TB disk as I have two of the 1TB varients of these in my SFF PC at home and I think the gains on low noise/heat far out weigh any miniscle reduction in performance by excluding the Black variants.

So how does it look or can I do better for similar money (plus or minus about £100/125 is ok)

ps he definately wants an SG01 case as I've already built him 2 PC's a year or so ago which he uses for other purposes at home and work and he likes the size and quality

The Phenom II X6 is a six core processor.

The Phenom II X6 1055T is around £20 more than the Phenom II X4 965:

The X6 1055T offers better multithreaded performance over the X4 965BE but lower single threaded performance.

I would look at this motherboard:

It has the new SB850 southbridge which has 6 SATA 3.0 ports and it also USB 3.0 too. The HD4250 IGP also has 128MB of dedicated DDR3 RAM on the motherboard.

One of the 1.5TB hard drives will be considerably cheaper per GB than a 2TB hard drive:

I would go with this Antec PSU:

This is a Seasonic made unit which is not only quite efficient but also uses good quality capacitors too. Since the PSU is acting as a system exhaust it would make sense to get a better PSU.

TBH,I would get the 450W Corsair HX450W modular PSU which can be had for under £60 and is also made by Seasonic too.

Tbh it seems overkill for coding. Surely you won't need that much HDD space? I am guessing ofc you have some sort of Subversion system going on and don't store all your work locally, unless he does a lot of hd video editting at work and likes to store everything on his desktop. Plus A Solid State drive seems a silly requirement if you ask me. I would say 250-500GB to be enough, easily.

Also i really doubt you need a 600w PSU, i doubt you will even use half of that EVER. So you can afford to cut it back.

You seem to have a blueray drive in there too. I can't see the advantage of this at all. Unless you like backing up stuff on blueray but then again you can't burn blueray with this drive anyway so thats pointless. So either spend a bit more or a lot less!

Why do you need the 3 additional fans? You aren't planning to over clock and the case has good cooling anyway. i am sure temps would be fine - i would leave them out for now then when you do build it and test it if the temps seem high you can order some more fans! Same with the Low profile CPU cooler - you said you're not overclocking so surely the one provided with the CPU be enough?

Although a 6 core processor is a good call when it comes to compile time!

looks fine to me drop down to 1.5tb however and drop the bluray drive (unless its a requirement)

get the 6 core (no reason why not)

how many monitors does he use?
