North Korea supposedly torpedo South Korean Ship

How can the north koreans have acquired a German torpedo ? i thought there is a ban in selling ANY weapon system to NK . It doesnt sound right to me .

Could be an old(ish) torpedo, bought from a 3rd party - i.e. germany sold to minor asian state, said state sold the torpedos on when they bought a better model etc....

Or it could be a german design, that they have acquired plans for and reverse engineered themselves. Torpedos arent high tech weapons.

This whole story really is dodgy. They might be nuts but we're being told that they're the aggressors in a weird situation. After they denied it. Stinks.

I wish they would stop going on about it on the UK news, everytime they say something I get my mum on the phone panicing that I'mm going to be nuked any second.

I'm in Seoul right now and I can tell you nobody here is concerned. Not the Koreans I work with, Not the US army guys I drink with.

The army guys have had a couple of drills/alerts but nothing much more than they normally do. The koreans are angry about the whole thing but nobody here wants a war.

I've been to Yongsan garrison and I've seen photos taken on bases all over Korea (Ossan air force base in particular) and its not just some hangover from the Korean war. They are a real working bases and have real toys that could blow the crap out of anything the north have.

Yes Seoul is in range of NK artilery and rockets, in fact I even know where to go if somebody decides to shell us cause most of the subways in Seoul are designed as emergency shelters

But right now I'm sleeping soundly enough here.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but this does sound ever so slightly fishy, I know NK as a country are a bit off their rockers, but it seems a bit of a coincidence that this would only be identified as them being the perpetrators because it has North Korean writing on it

Have SK or the US just fabricated a reason for attacking NK?

SK and the US do not want a war with the North - they have one of the largest standing armies in the world. It would be a bloodbath.

the size of the standing army means nothing..iraq had a huge army and it didnt stop them getting steamrollered

these days large troop concentrations of the type North Korea Deploys only means it easier to hit them, and in these days of 24hour all weather surveillance you simply cannot move the formations required for invasion unobserved, which means you can hit staging areas, this is the advantage the South Koreans will have and no doubt the North Koreans receive intelligence form China so they will know exactly the same...so conventional war is futile and even North Korea know this. they dont have the resources for a sustained campaign either, food is always short, power is intermittent and fuel isnt abundant. the phrase all mouth and no trousers springs to mind.

A very interesting viewpoint, cheers :)

British media getting carried away again?

The Americans have had a standing force in Korea for over 60 years.
They also happen to be the most powerful nation on the earth right now.
If there was a stiuation like this in Europe say the Albainians sank a Italian ship then you'd expect NATO to be involved backing up its allies and member nations.
This is no diffrent, South Korea is allied with america why shouldnt the US back them up?

PS
Just checked the BBC news website which as im outside the UK has adverts on it.
Top advert is a Raytheon advert for Patriot Missle Defense systems :)
Apparently Seoul has quite a few of these.

It's complicated. Not least, ROKians don't really want them there.

Warm up on Iran then Kim jon Il next. Sounds like a plan to me.

War is not good but neither is having generations of people suffer under these unelected dictators. If they don't like democracy and prefer the strongest survive ideology then lets play.

NK want to provoke some conflict I think. Despite economically not being able to do anything, a renewed conflict would be good for state propaganda and directing all problems outwards.

If SK retaliated, NK could deny being the instigators and play the self-defense card. It's probably stupid enough to think that China/Russia would buy into it too.

China won't get involved directly or by proxy against the West. China have come a long way since the 50s, they are very much tied into capitalism now whether they like it or not.

kinda contradictory for the NK to provoke a war when it knows it will lose it , for reasons of propaganda . In the short term they might benefit from distracting the attention of its citizens but it will also mean the end for this regime.
