3GS is coming up to a year old now, and on the 19th June the warranty will expire.

On ebay a Applecare code to extend the warranty is £34ish.

Now its a launch day 3GS with 18 month contract so I can't get another contract but could sell it and get a 4G on PAYG.

Im imagining something in the region of £300 for my 3GS as a mate bought a 3G 5 months ago for £300.

Whats my options, what can I do?

The phone is insured but I don't like committing fraud :p

I wasn't going to upgrade until 2011 but if the cost to go to the 4G is small enough I may consider it.

Opinions?

If you have insurance on the phone then surely that covers you anyway? Or is it a 'drop/stolen' only sort of cover?

One thing i'd like to know is what sim size this new iphone requires. I was planning on selling my 3GS to my dad and buying a PAYG iphone 4G/HD on O2 and sticking my contract sim in. However if it requires a micro sim i wont be able to do this.

I was about to post the same thing!

Got my 3GS on launch day. I'll be getting the new one, and my 3GS will probably be going to Mum!

Yep, i always try and palm off my old phones to my parents ;) any ideas if our current mini sim cards will be compatible yet though? I know nothings been officially announced yet, but i was hoping one of our uk networks may have leaked some info on this by now.

Apparently there's no technical difference between a sim and micro sim. You can just cut the sim down to size so I read.

I've previously read this too, however i then read that the micro sim stores extra information that the mini sim doesn't.

Everything I've seen says the new iPhone will be micro-SIM.

If that's the case, and you're on contract then I imagine carriers will replace your SIM when you upgrade/allow you to transfer your number if bought PAYG.

This is the main issue for me. I'm only half way through my iphone contract and i very much doubt my carrier will replace my sim for a micro sim that will not work in my current contract phone :( I'd have a lot more freedom to do what i want if the sim size remained the same.

Aye. That's what I've done with an O2 Pay-As-You-Go SIM for my iPad 3G.

http://www.johnbenson.net/How_to_Co..._a_SIM_to_a_MicroSIM_with_a_Meat_Cleaver.html are the instructions I used, and my AT&T iPad SIM as a template.

Erm, no.

The only problem I'm evisaging is networks refusing to replace the sim with a miro-sim unless you are on a specific iPhone tariff. In that respect, they've got you by the balls.

Yeh exactly. Im still only half way through my 24 month 3GS contract on a £25 a month plan so i dont think i'll have any upgrade opportunity to change to a micro sim soon. I think the only thing i can do is stick with my 3GS for another year (by which time it'll be the next iphone) or get a newer/better handset like the desire, which is very tempting. Above all i've learnt 24 month contracts or a no go from now on lol

By the way sorry to the OP for slightly hijacking the thread, but i think this mini to micro sim business is going to scupper a few peoples upgrade plans (mine and my mates especially), unless of course you're contract is ending.

Surely for a small cost they will replace your SIM with a Micro-SIM? I hadnt taken this into consideration as I just assumed that as Im still staying with O2 (on 18month contract that ends in December) on an iPhone tariff what phone I particular have is of no real relevance...

To my knowledge it seems the original O2 iPhone tariffs are the ones to be on anyway compared to Vodafone/Orange when it comes to data...

I can almost guarantee they'll upgrade your SIM if you agree to sign a new contract / pay a fee.

I finished my 3G contract ages ago, and currently sit on a iPhone Simplicity 20 contract so I'm ready for the next handset :D

Before you do anything do check with o2. It may be out of manufacturers warranty but the mobile operator should cover it for the length of the contract. I know Vodafone do, I'm not sure if anyone else hopped on that bandwagon yet or not...

Cheers EVH, will wait and see and if they refuse Ill just cut it up...

While I remember anyone like to give me a ballpark figure on how much Ill get for a pretty much mint condition black 32Gb iPhone 3GS? Might try and sell it privately before I try the usual phone return places...
