PSN+ (PSN Premium Service)

Full article aka rumor

And Joystiq has some cool, possible details about it. Like Xbox LIVE Gold, PSN+ allegedly will offer its subscribers "bonuses," but it won't strip the ability for non-paying members of PSN from participating in online play. In a nutshell, the PSN+ user will be able to access exclusive DLC, PS Store deals, and cross-game voice chat, as well as opt-in to automatic system updates, and that new PlayStation Protection Plan. Interestingly, Joystiq reports via their source that PSN+ subscribers will get access to something called a "first hour" demo, which allows the user to play the first hour of a downloadable retail game before deciding to buy it. (Apparently they'll have to download the entire game for the access first.)

Pay before you buy(aka demo) is a good idea. Probably help you save money in the long run.

EDIT: can a don edit the thread title to Premium. Darn posting at 5:40 in the morning with blurry morning vision.

Saw this list posted (rumour of course)
- Access to rotating list of Playstation minis and PSone classics (the freebie games previously rumoured?)
- Exclusive in-game DLC
- Playstation Store discounts
- 'First Hour' demos of retail titles - play the first hour for free, then purchase the full game if you wish (PSN games? There ain't many retail games on the PSN store currently...)
- Playstation Protection Plan coverage
- Exclusive access to cross-game chat
- Access to auto/background patching of games

Cross game chat prob wont be part of it as Sony said it will be for all PSN users, but things change lol.
The Playstation protection thing is worth paying for if it works like continous play, but it all depends on price. This is kinda how i would have liked XBL to be everyone can play on line for free but gold members get extra stuff included.

Can't see the first hour demos of retail games happening any time soon.

Cross game chat and auto patching sound good but I won't be paying for them. As long as multiplayer stays free I'm not fussed :)

I wonder, since PSN is controlled independently in each region, if there are different perks and bonuses are offered depending on which region your in.

The fact that you can still play games online even if you don't pay is a great move.
MS should take a leaf out of sony's book on this.

I think its more the other way round. Sony have realised that they probably shouldn't have offered completely free online until now. They still lose money on every PS3 sold and with no money being made from PSN, they need to do something.

Live still has more subscribers than PSN and more people are willing to pay for it, so MS are very happy atm.

Sure I read something the other day that Sony are finally making a profit on PS3 units, it was only a couple of quid, if that.

Found it - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100656-PlayStation-3-System-Sales-No-Longer-a-Money-Pit

People don't have any choice but to pay for live if they want to play online.I think you'd find most people would rather not pay if they had the choice.
After paying £300 for my 360,£40 for a game,£15 a month for internet.I don't like that I have to pay to play online with my 360 but I have to.
Sony are doing it right. You get to play online for free but if you want premium extras it costs you.

I agree with Biron. M$ have shafted the end user.

It should allow free online play and you pay for the extra bells and whistles, such as day 1 access to demos etc.

Gold should be similar to PSN but also build in (considering the failure rate) a swap out program like continuous play if your console dies. THAT would be worth the £5 per month/£39.99/£25 a year.

I don't want to go into the Live debate thing again really, but for the sake of £25 a year for Live or £2 a month, I don't think its a massive expense for a better online experience than PSN. And Live Gold has a lot of features as "Premium" too, so for £2 a month, I really don't think its bad at all.

Live Gold already incorporates some of the features than PSN+ is rumoured to have, like cross-game chat and discounted store prices. The other things that PSN+ has like "exclusive DLC" could be an awkward area if true imo. I wouldn't want to pay for PSN+ then pay again for the exclusive DLC (unless the DLC bit is included in the price).

It will be down to the pricing structure. Engadget said someone threw out £9.99 for PSN+. Didn't say per month or per year, but i would assume per month what with the Protection Plan.

I can definitely understand why people don't want to pay for Live since PSN is free online, but personally I don't have a problem with £2 a month for a great service.

At £120 that is quiet the premium product! even with a protection plan.

True but it was $9.99 a month, if you pay for XBL monthly its about $7.40 month but only $50 a year, so Sony may offer a reduced rate for a year sub. Most phone insurance is about the £7 mark a month which is around the same as PSN+ could be.

Maybe so, but £40 a year isnt exactly expensive. Obviously i'd rather it was free but its not so bad really.

People still pay £40 a year for Live? ;)

Paying £40, yes you are getting shafted, but a lot of places online offer it for ~£25, which is nothing at all really.

Totally agree £40 a year isn't much at all.

Maybe my shafted comment was harsh, but it would still be nice to get the online part for free and get other benefits for being Gold.

I love the fact PSN is free to play online as I only play a couple of times a month.

If xbl was to do a 10 / 20 & 30 hour play plan, that would be loads better. you wouldn't feel you where getting screwed by not playing for a couple of weeks.

anyway, back on topic.

I'll be sticking the PSN free. not PSN+ for me, unless some amazing new feature grabs me. which it doesn't at the moment.
