Do all TD drivers think they are driving a supercar?

I'm deliberately ignoring the A8 because:

a) I don't know enough about them having not driven one
b) I can actually appreciate how in a car like an A8, large tank range etc etc becomes part of the cars ability rather than an economy choice.

If you could add a footnote to your future diesel posts:

*excluding the A8 4.2 TDi

...I wouldn't have to get involved and fall on my sword for diesel. Be nice if you could try one, prety sure you would come away impressed irregardless of its fuel.

I asked about the Menz in an earlier post.

-edit: In my defence of the economy having very little if any bearing on my choice of the diesel, I never post pictures of my trip computer and never post in the bi-monthly "Whats your mpg" threads...be a bit daft to get all hot about buying a car for its economy and then not bothering to amaze one and all with it.

Ah yes, the Menz! Had forgotten all about that. My attempt with the polishing machine was a bit of a disaster really and I've not plucked up the courage to give it another go since

Every run of the mill turbo diesel I've driven has felt fast, while not actually being fast. It's the torque curve, nail it in 2nd up to beyond the peak power and torque and it feels like you've engaged warp drive, but glance at the speedo and you're only doing about 40. I don't like this, I like the nice smooth linear power delivery of the petrol. When I get back in the Accord it initially feels slower but that illusion soon disappears. I don't care that the diesel can do 30-50mph faster in 4th gear, I have a gear lever ;)

But then the BMW 35d engine, isn't quite the same as a 2.0 TDCI now, is it. Neither is an Audi A8 4.2 TDI. V8 turbo diesel = win  What sort of average economy do you get with yours Fett?

Followed an old A6 TDi today...

The smoke

One trait Ive notice it diesel c0cks tend to tickle the throttle away in 1st, engage 2nd then tramp on the accelerator, leaving any small engine petrol that has just changed from 1st into 2nd in a bit of a hole in terms of output with an inappropriate down change really needed. That said I bet the diesel cars generally feel a lot quicker inside than something like mine even if I do accelerate at the same rate.

I rated the Audi A3 Sportline I drove a while back, the agricultural ness gave it a degree of charm especially as the 6 speed box was happy to comply with my VTEC esque requests :P

Best I've seen is 39mpg on the motorway but in general and pretty mixed driving it's standing at 30.5.

It's not the stuff of hyper miling dreams but considering it's hauling it's bulk with punch, not bad. People tend to forget that although it's an anonymous looking luxobarge, it will out drag a good chunk of hot hatches. That's not its purpose or its forte but in all fairness to the pig, she can shift if she needs to.

Please, in the Car Cleaning thread, elaborate. I went and bought special bottles for you and all. I'm a bit sad now.

.

That's actually very impressive! I was expecting you to say nearer 25-28. See now that's a proper diesel vehicle. :)

*220CDI mercedes drivers. theyre the worst imo with their tiny little diesels, pulling out into stupidly small gaps and then not being able to accelerate anywhere so causing a hold up

diesels. stick to the nearside lanes for heavens sake (unless you have a lorry sized diesel that isnt in a lorry). those 5.0 touregs dont half shift when they want to

Yet again you confuse me, is the engine in a c220 not both larger and more powerful than nous Golf

but i dont go attempting to dive into gaps into moving traffic in a car without enough balls to keep up with the speed everyone else is travelling at. driver and car errors

hmmm no wonder they dont seem to shift

Engine Size 2143 cc
Cylinders 4
0-60 mph 8.1 s
Power Output 167 bhp
Valves 16
Torque 400 Nm 295 lb-ft
Top Speed 144 mph

I'm happy with my ST, and that's where I'll stay, happy in 2.5T Petrol land, after having that diesel hire car, and driving a few other diesels, they just don't appeal to me.

possibly, if you consider 40-70 etc who knows

thats in a c class, it can only be worse in an e class

Why would it be worse? Same engine and all...

They can shift that's for sure, 400Nm is plenty to pull out, overtake and pull back in without much trouble at all.

I think it's more down to the driver not making use of all that torque than anything else.

c class to e class... theres going to be at least a couple hundred kg difference in the equation

im just saying, most times that i come across a tractor attempting to be driven like a supercar and failing badly, its a small engined merc

It's 1585KG vs 1735KG (c220 cdi vs e220 cdi) so not a huge a difference really.

I like my Diesel, but I'm not deluded in any way as to why I have it.

That said, it's been an awesome tool, ultra economical/looks the part/ultra comfy but at the same time great fun when the occasion allows. I'll definately have another "D" BMW when this one's time is up.
