one day they will combine the two and you'll have a toaster that makes toast bacon and a poached egg at once for the ultimate breakfast!

I am really surprised about the amount of posters in this forum who are hurt when Microsoft is criticised. It's like I'm personally attacking some of you. I'm just stating the obvious guys, I'm not attacking you, Microsoft operating systems are still built on DOS, which in no way or another is an UNIX beating operating system.

I really honestly thought this was an IT geek forum.

It's not a case of prefer for most though it's a case of necessity.

You can't use a mac for what a lot of people use their pc for.

You really can. Honestly. I'm not trying to sell you a Mac, I'm not trying to win you over, but honestly you can do the vast majority of Windowsy stuff on a Mac.

The big sticking point, I find, and please do bear in mind that I've been addressing these issues, selling to customers, and teaching people how to use their Macs for several years, is accountancy. If you're an accountant, and you want to buy a Mac and not install windows, then I'm sorry but you are SOL.

Likewise if you need your computer for work and your company uses proprietary software.

Otherwise? You'll be fine.

And you can always install Windows on your Mac if you must. Personally I think it's a little bit of a shame to install Windows on a Mac, seeing as you've spent all this extra money, and I do find that some customers, with the easy option of just booting/virtualising into Windows will take that option instead of working out how to do it 'properly' on the Mac will just do that, but the fact is you can.

What are your examples of things that 'most people' will use a Windows based PC for that they couldn't do on a Mac?

majority of games at an acceptable frame rate and at a cost of less than your first car.

That and running all that old crap they've been buying for windows os's over the years.

Not going to happen for the average customer.

He's not talking about making a to do list and some picture editing whilst updating a calender and watching YouTube. ¬_¬

Yeah, but you might as well just save HUNDREDS of £s and just buy a PC in the first place.

I borrowed my friends Macbook Pro over Christmas. It was nice to use, but I just kept going back to my desktop.

It's not so much that there are things you cant do on a Mac that you can do on Windows, but the fact that you've got the option for so much more software alternatives on Windows.

Oh, and Games. Have you seen the Games Library on steam for Mac? It's like a backlog of all the free games you got in your box of kellogs years ago :p

Most people don't play games on their computers.

Windows accounts for something silly like 15% of the games market. You may still be clinging on to it, but the fact is, people, normal people, don't play games on their computer. They play them on the Wii, or their PS3 or their 360.

And all the old crap they've been buying for windows has, for the most part, either a Mac version or a Mac equivalent. It's VERY rare that you can't do something you can on Windows on a PC, and it tends to be proprietary, bespoke software.

Let's face it, if there's enough people that want to do something, that constitutes a market - and if there's a market, people will make the apps.

All the things you can't do on a Mac, you can't do because no bugger has got off their arse to make the software. And if they haven't made the software, it's because most people won't use it.

What it really comes down to is this:

Things I can't do on a Mac:

Sage

Things I can't do on a Mac if I have £70 to spend on a Windows disk:

Nothing

Honestly - you had it for a few weeks. If you get off your arse (figuratively) and look, the software is out there for almost everything. Don't misunderstand me - I don't think everyone in the world would be better off with a Mac. Some people just like to tinker and control too much to be happy with a Mac, and that's fine. Some people like games too much. Again, fine. But regular people? Better off with a Mac. Absolutely.

PardonTheWait, your point is valid but the point we're making is that everything that can now be done on a Mac, you've been able to do on PCs for years using less effort, less time and for less money. Yes, most people would be served fine by a Mac, but most people already have PCs or have used one and most PCs are cheaper.

Nothing.

Why pay more for lesser hardware and having to buy an MS os anyway in the end?
