Turning off an old (80s) TV set

AC and DC are lethal, human body is run off electro, not sure if its the current but you can either get blown away or just zapped, say touching a door handle if it was hooked up to electricity, one would blow you away the other would make your muscle clamp and you get fried.

I aint a spark so dont know if its true or not.

My science teacher told me AC makes you stick and DC blows you away.

Apparently there is enough power left in an old crt to kill you after it's been unplugged for years.

Electrolytic capacitors eventually gain a 'memory' of around 10%. EG if one is used more or less continuously for 5-10 years charged at say 4000V and then it is disconnected AND discharged and then left it may charge itself back up to 400V. Could definitely be deadly after many years.

Aye - old enough to remember the National Anthem, followed by the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep as TV shut down for the night.

I was also fascinated by the dot when the Tv was turned off. I wouldn't leave the room until it had gone compeltely.

Hehehe oh so true !

I tell the kids I see today that TV used to finish before midnight when I was a kid and that we only had 2 channels and they just dont believe me. :D

They usually say "2 channels??, what the hell did you do?" , to which I would reply "we went out and interacted with people, you know....other humans...those 2-legged things you sometimes see in the streets" :D

They also played the national anthem at the end and had the test card on for hours.

Own up, who watched the test card? :D

80's tv's where awesome with the big buttons. You pushed one in and the other sprung out with a big clunk.

I remember covertly watching tv in bed as a nipper and using a pool cue as my remote to hit the off button when the old man came up stairs.

Snooker was also so much more interesting in black and white.

lol I remember watching snooker as a kid on the crappy black and white portable in my bedroom :p

Remember folks, it's not the volts that kill you but the amps. You could "shock" yourself with 20,000 volts, but if there is next to no amperage, it won't do a thing. On the other hand, a couple of volts but a high enough amperage could certainly kill you.

Yeah you're going to need more than a couple of volts with the resistance of the human body. :p

Wood effect 80's tv ***
It'd been handed down to my parents by my grandparents and we had it for a long time til they got a new tv.

We also had one of those black cable boxes where you'd only get nickelodeon up until a certain time and it became paramount comedy after. My house when I was a lkid was the early 80's in the late 90's :D
