Guys,
I know we have a few people here working in IT so was after abit of help.

Basically, been with my current company for 5 years.
Started out on helpdesk, moved upto helpdesk supervisor earlier this year with a pay increase of 11%.

I get paid a standard wage, but then I get overtime pay for on-call on top of that, which is 1 week every month.

I have been checking out average salary for IT Helpesk Supervisor, and even with my on call pay, I am way below average.

We have a pay review coming up at work.

I need some ammo for this interview....

I know that if I quote the average salary, they will probably come back and say "but you have on call, which puts you upto X amount"

Is it right for them to do this? Or is on call considered overtime therefore not part of my base salary?

Please help

Dependant on the size of the company and location, it varies, but for a supervisor, I'd expect (in London) to be earning 25-30k grand total inc payments.

I work in London as a shift sys admin and I only get 30k (inc payments)

Hope this helps.

Does the on call not depend upon your contract? I would be checking that.

I do helpdesk work :(, but fortunately get paid more than average helpdesk jobs. Well certainly the ones I looked at a few year ago.

On-call allowances are not taken into account for overtime payments, pensions or any of that. You work extra to earn that allowance.

Without asking you what you earn, how much do you think should be on, and what level is your role? Are you between management and staff, more of a team lead, or are you actual management?

Helpdesk supervisors within my company I would expect to earn £16-18k.

My roll is in between managers/staff.

For reference we are employing new helpdesk staff currently on starting salary of 16K.

Considering that, I am not on much more than that without on call :/ and Ive been with the company for 5 years and am now a supervisor.

In comparison, we used to be a smaller company, but got bought out by a much larger company.

When I started on the helpdesk I started on 12k.

I was looking at a general IT Helpdesk supervisor, average pay, outside of London, and it was anywhere between 25-30k.

I am on a lot less than that without on call, with on call overtime it falls just below that figure.

I would say something like you love the job/company/people etc but you feel you bring a lot of value to the workplace and are forced to look for another job with a more competitive salary.

Importantly prove your worth to the company don't talk average salarys you need justificaiton.

Redrum, thats the page I was looking at for average salary.

Obviously thats not to say thats the salary I should be on.

But considering I am over 10k less than that, before on call pay, I think it is something to be concerned about.

I currently work in an IT service desk for the NHS and without disclosing my salary, i'm not on more than 20k. I was supervisor for about a year and didn't get any extra money at all really. I've looked around at other areas (i'm moving to Lincoln so i'm keeping my eyes peeled) and the average for what i do, especially with other PCT's, seems to be around 22k so i'd mark the supervisor salary around 26/27k not incluiding OT/OC payments.

Ok well I definitely think I should be on more.

As before on call payments its below 20k.

Ill have to see what they can come up with :S

Oddly enough, i've been wondering about whether i'm paid the right amount tbh.

I look after every conceivable thing that a dumbass user could construe as being I.T. related.

This includes:
HARDWARE
- Servers (x6)
- Client pc/desktops - (x50 in total)
- Blackberry devices
- all printers;networked and client (x12)
- Routers, switches, cabling
- 4 other subsidiary company's I.T requirements, both locally and remote.

SOFTWARE
- Window Server 2003 and 2008
- Exhange Server 2003 and 2007
- BackupExec software
- BES
- MS Office 2003 and 2007
- AD, all network/domain wide policies etc.
- Sage ACT and Line 50 (as admin only though)

We have SQL, but i know naff all about it to be fair.

The company paid £3600 for me to train and gain A+, N+, MCSA/MCSE certs, none of which i've completed the exams for as i'm always too busy. But it doesn't stop me doing my job well (the MD is happy with me anyway).

Aside from that, i'm also repsonsible for designing and producing all marketing/corporate tender docs, invites, stationery etc, as i have 18 years experience in the print and design trade.

So, in reality i'm doing 2 jobs: I.T./System Administrator and DTP Designer.

What do you guys think i should be earning?

IT Jobs Watch says the average for a help desk supervisor is 30k. If you want evidence of an average salary to take to them, you could print the JW page out, although I don't know if that's a good idea or not.

http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/uk/helpdesk supervisor.do

The trouble with using that is that it's only the advertised salary, not the actual salary. And as usual, when you start talking about salary before they offer you the job it'll be MUCH lower than that.

I'd say £20k is about right, £30k being more reasonable for city/london, and £35k+ for city/london + financial.

The problem with looking at average salary is that the same job title does not necessarily mean the same job role/responsibility or the same market for hiring qualified candidates.

You are much better arguing why you are worth more, rather than arguing that you are paid less than the average.
