Tri over Quad

I'm building another pc for someone. and they want 2x 5970's
What i would like to know is, would the Corsair HX 1000W that they got, run 2x 5970 clocked ok ?

If so, would a i7 920 @4.2 be fine with the 2 cards.
I know tri-fire runs well. but would there be a nicer boost running a clocked 5970 in quad, over a clocked tri-fire 1x 5970 & 1 x 5870.
Are the newer 10.5 driver optimised better for quad.
Be interesting to know

They want to upgrade to 3 monitor setup later on.

two 5970 in xfire ??? they must have 3 x 30" monitors running or something. Can't see the need for 2 of them cards tbh...

the tri fire route of 5850 and a 5970 is MORE than enough tbh.

scaling with two 5970's isn't great from memory...someone might be able to confirm or deny that though

I have not seen many reviews on quad vs tri but the one i did see was around release day so drivers have probably came on a lot since then. This review showed that tri-fire worked better than quad-fire in the games tested but when quad-fire worked it was a decent bit faster. The only other thing i have seen was a thread on here stating that quad-fire 5870 was shown to be faster and work better than gtx480 4 way sli due to drivers. This could mean that quad-fire is working pretty good now or quad sli is just pants atm.

To sum up i think tri-fire is the safest option and quad-fire 5970 is the faster option of the 2 but i am not sure how good the drivers are for it. Tri-fire over the years though has been said to be the sweet spot.
