Help me decide on these 2 air coolers plz

Ive decided I want to buy a air cooler, atm Im using a fan to keep my ferrets cool on hot days, but I want something to cool the room. Because on hot days, my room isnt too bad until late after noon, then all of a sudden the temp will shoot up, and temp will keep climbing untill likle 12-1am, its crazy, cos I would have thought the temp would drop in the evening. The max temp its got in my room is 32c over the summers, and thats far to hot for me, let alone the ferrets, but their not to bad cos they have a fan.

So its between these 2 air coolers

I would like to buy the small 1 due to having nowhere to really store the larger 1. But the small 1 is only 20watts and the large 1 is 80watts.. I guess im a fool if I go for the small 1, I have about a 3 - 5 meter sqr room to cool??
 
I'd say neither; to get any semblance of reduction of temperature you'll be continuously topping up the water/ice reservoir.

Either save money and get a big fan and open your doors and windows, or get a proper air-conditioning unit. These are a complete waste of money.
 
£24 smalll 1.... £34 large 1.. I think they will both purify the room, cos thats putting moisture in the air isnt it, and thats how air coolers work?

Well that's another issue too... do you have much electrical equipment in your room? Not too sure how comfortable I'd be with pumping freshly-humidified air into a room full of expensive kit.

The main things are my pc and sound system, but the cooler will be well away from them. I also use a gas fire in the winter and the gas goes into the air causing the walls and stuff to become slightly damp, and I havent had no probs with that over the years.

Has anyone got a air cooler, and if so how well do they work, cos Ive read they can take the room temp down by 7c??
 
Evaporative coolers don't work well in this country, in a dry climate sure but humidity is already a problem when it gets hot round here, you're just making it worse.

Plus, unless you do keep putting ice blocks in, they struggle to bring the temperature down by more than a couple of degrees - you'd not even notice it.

I'd suggest you remove things that make heat, get some black out blinds to stop the room warming up so much from sunlight, and maybe think about a ceiling fan (goes in the light socket).

If you buy an evaporative cooler you are throwing your money away. Get the smaller one, it'll fit in the bin.
 
We used one temporarily in our server room and it performed fine, just had to keep an eye on the water level.
 
Surely its like a fan heater isnt it,, your blowing cooler air into the room then the air thats in the room, and as long as you keep the water nice and cold, it will blow out nice cold air and that will slowly drop the room temp???

The problem is that the water or ice which you're using to do the cooling is still inside the room that you're trying to cool. When you start moving the warm air over it and it has no way of dissipating the heat, it takes no time at all to reach room temperature. And at that point you have as much effect as a normal fan but with the added humidity issues.

ETA: My folks bought one for their living room in the week of hot weather we had last year. Aside from moving the air around, it made no difference at all to the temperature in the room

The water doesn't need to be colder, the process of evaporation will sap a couple of degrees from the air. But really that isn't a lot.

Plus half the cooling effect of air con is the de-humidifying, dry air feels cooler because your body can cool itself better (sweat). Evap coolers have the opposite effect.
 
Fan + white blinds + open windows. The only cheap solution.

If blinds are a bit expensive then get a box of A4 paper and some sellotape and stick em on your window. That is what I did in my uni halls, because I had black blinds and those things didn't help at all.

It pulls the warm air in,, cools it down with water, then spits the cooler air back into the room like a fan heater, and surely as long as it got the air nice and cold before spiting it out, it will cool the room to some degree surely???.. But yeah Id be prob filling or changing the water every 30mins or so with some nice fresh cold water.

Thats the strange thing,, I hardly get the sun in my room, just for a few hrs in the late afternoon, but what I dont understand is why does the temp carrying on going up when the sun dies down in the eve, till about 12- 1 in the morning even with the windows and doors open. then by the morning, its only like 4c lower, then if its another hot day the next day, its even worse, cos the room hasnt really cooled done much.
