The ex-housekeeper of former attorney general Baroness Scotland has been jailed for eight months. Loloahi Tapui, who had overstayed her student visa by four years, duped former Baroness Scotland into hiring her as her housekeeper. The Tongan was found guilty of fraud at Southwark Crown Court, in London.
...
Tapui, who knew she should have left the UK in February 2005, told a series of lies and convinced the former attorney general to welcome her into her Chiswick home, in west London, as part of her family in January last year. Lady Scotland, who was fined £5,000 for failing to take copies of the documents her former housekeeper claimed showed she was entitled to work in the UK, told the court she "bitterly regrets" her mistake. (BBC online)
On the face of it, this £5,000 fine seems really hard on Baroness Scotland, one has to feel sympathy for her :(

Zero sympathy!

Considering that she was the Attorney General at the time and had been responsible for steering the 2006 Immigration, Nationality and Asylum Act through Parliament, which says employers can be jailed if they knowingly employ an illegal migrant, she got off way too lightly, IMHO.

Did Baroness Scotland, the UK Attorney General knowingly employ an illegal migrant then

she failed to request and keep copies of right to work/visa etc - a legislation that the government she was part of brought it
I was rather under the impression that Baroness Scotland had simply failed to take and keep copies of the documents Loloahi Tapui claimed showed she was entitled to work in the UK.

I wasn't aware that she didn't even ask for it, that's awful, even worse than piracy / theft

Who exactly is Baroness Scotland and why should I care about her or her house keeper?

She is the former attorney general, the MAIN LEGAL advisor to the government, as such she is expected to know the law backwards, forwards, sideways, upside down etc.

She employed an illegal immigrant as her house keeper, and failed to adhere to the new laws that the governments he was part of brought in (laws that she would have helped phrase)
