Playing video games before bedtime may give people an unusual level of awareness and control in their dreams, LiveScience has learned.

That ability to shape the alternate reality of dream worlds might not match mind-bending Hollywood films such as "The Matrix," but it could provide an edge when fighting nightmares or even mental trauma.

Dreams and video games both represent alternate realities, according to Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist at Grant MacEwan University in Canada. But she pointed out that dreams arise biologically from the human mind, while video games are technologically driven by computers and gaming consoles.

I always play games before bed, but very rarely do I feel in control of my dreams. The only times I remember when I was sort of in control was when I had woken up and then fallen back to sleep again. :)

Sound familiar actually, whether you have concious control or not is kind of difficult to prove though. You could be just dreaming you had control, rather than actually having any.

I thought it was porn and sex that gave you control of your dreams

Oh, and I don't "dream" :D

True. I always find my dreams are more vivid once I've fallen back to sleep again. :)

I find it perplexing that they say dreams are about reorganising the events of the day by the subconcious...

Well, surviving the zombie apocalypse whilst being able to fly, and escaping from vampire infested cities on a pushbike are not the usual things I get up to on a daily basis to be honest.

lol :D

I sometimes dream about the games I've been playing also.

When I was playing LotRO 24/7 I quite often dreamt about killing huge monsters near my house while fending off buxom wenches who wanted to rape me, amongst other things. Good times.

The same, although AofE 2 can make for a very confusing dream, a little bit lilliputian in context...

So if I play Fable 2 before I sleep, I will be in control of my fantasy world dream?

Sweet, can finally find all those damn gargoyles!

I don't usually remember my dreams at all, I love it when I close my eyes at 12am, then it feels like 1 second later and it's 6am when I wake up

Now and again, I know I'm dreaming, so I take control of what I do in the dream, in this state I almost feel awake and the slightest noise will wake me

Everytime i fall asleep im aware that im in a dream but when i try to control of it I always wake up. Really annoying. Weird thing is as soon as I wake up it is the next morning :S

Theres a forum dedicated to this and apparently some people are really good at it.

I can never be in a dream and think it's a dream at the time untill I wake up and think damn it..
I play games quite a lot before bed aswell.

Sounds more like a nightmare to me.. Fending them off? Surely embracing them with open arms would be more of a dream ;)

Ive often drempt of the game i was playing before hitting the hay, same with movies ive just watched too.

Loved dreaming about being "Tony Stark/Iron Man" lol.

Never dreamed about the games I've played.

Have been able to open my eyes and wake myself up in my dream quite a few times before when I felt I was in danger?

Also when I get woken up from a dream I've been able to send myself back to sleep quite fast to return to the dream, and plan things I want to happen in that short time, pretty cool and happened a few times before?

I've had a few mad dreams after a gaming session so nowadays I have a wind down before I crash.
When I was in my Original COD clan I had a nightmare when the Nazis were just about to rifle butt me to death, I gave one last kick out & made contact......
With the wall :( + :p Smashed my knee, foot & ankle.

Another time I was set upon by a Squad of BF2 heads & in my hand fight I fell out of bed & smashed into some stuff, I wasn't awake & went steaming out of my bedroom turned left & fell into my back bedroom where I woke properly. :o

Like I said, I have a wind down now. :D
