Gulf Oil Spill ( LIVE FEED )

BP said its effort was making progress in stemming the oil flow but they cannot be sure. So we wait for good news.

They are pumping mud... So far the results seem promising. We'll know by tomorrow.. BP have said they'll still go-ahead with the permanent solution of drilling a second well, however this will take a couple of months..

Fingers crossed... If this doesn't work, we could see oil coming onto the beaches of SW FL, which is where i now live.

Of course they will be drilling a second well. Theres Oil there!

I just can't imagine the engineering involved, trying to get a mud/cement mix to solidify in water at that depth whilst also withstanding the pressure of the oil flowing out of the ground...you'd think that the second the mix exited the pipe it would just be blown out into the ocean. Plus afterwards it's got to be solid enough to be a (semi)permanent solution so that it just doesn't blow out again.

It's pumped in at a very high pressure - between the pressure of the oil below and the pumps above that mud (clay mostly) is being mega-compacted.

Imagine if you put some wet sand in a tube and compacted as hard as you possible could - how easy would that be to get out? Would it just fall out or would you need some violent shaking?

They are relying on the head of pressure from the dense mud overcoming the pressure of the oil trying to escape. It's not really trying to compact the mud just simply try and get mavity on the mud to overcome the well pressure.

The process also means some mud is escaping from the BOP which you can see in the live video.

News update:

Brief suspension

BP suspended its "top kill" procedure, untested at this depth, for several hours on Thursday so it could monitor progress.

It has now resumed pumping heavy mud into the ruptured well

It says it believes the procedure can work - although it may not know for days yet.

It would take 24-48 hours before BP engineers could tell whether "top kill" had worked, company officials said at about 2000 GMT on Thursday.

We continue to wait:

The oil company BP says operations to seal the hole in the damaged well are continuing.

BP chief executive Tony Hayward said the outcome would not be clear for another 48 hours.

Just put a bigger pipe over the damaged pipe and pump lol.

i no its not as simple as that but im getting bored of their failed attempts lol.

IMO I can't believe in this day and age something like this can happen and be allowed to continue for this amount of time. I'm no expert but they have the whole of BP and the united states at there disposal, they should do better!!

Well at least the picture is different:

and the news is not that good:

Oil giant BP says its latest operation has so far failed to halt the flow of crude oil from a leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Chief operating officer Doug Suttles said he was not sure the "top kill" operation would succeed and BP was preparing its next plan.

Looks like the black smoke monster from Lost did escape the island - Jacob said it would be bad for all of us. :(

This is an environmental nightmare - so much nature depends on that stretch of coastline. The cost is huge - to the economy and the planet.

How a megarich oil company didn't have contingency plans for this kind of leak is a mystery - if we can't drill safely we'll just have to put up with higher oil prices. Why do we have to have a mega disaster before things get done properly?
